I have a 5 month old malamute x staff who’s extremely high energy. She’s constantly on the move 24/7. I’m looking far ahead - when she’s 18 months - 2 years old - but I’m looking for something that would help her burn a lot of energy, maybe through running without me actually having to run to because I’d never be able to run long enough for her to be satisfied with it! I thought about a bike but I’m worried we’re going to get tangled and she’ll get hurt. I want to ideally start training her the basics of something now so when she’s bigger and older she’s already set to go. I know I can run her till she’s 2ish because of her joints and stuff! Any ideas on what we could do? We tried fetch and she’s not really into that so it only works for long before she’s bored and just wants to run! Thank you!

What about scentwork and mantrailing? Using their brain is very tiring for dogs, also the last thing you need is to create a super fit athlete that you can never tire.

It also has the advantage of being low impact so you could start now.

To get my lurchers fit enough to catch a hare before the ban of course I did use a bike and a steap grassed hill of a 100 yards, the bike was just to give them the build up of fitness, but the important part was the steep hill for real hard muscle build up, the bike is ok if your dogs are not crazy or else you will get tangled, lots of swimming seams to burn a bit of energy, it does help being fit in yourself.

I’m just thinking about taking her out for a run once a day, would that Male her too hard to tire out? I’ll definitely look into scent work and mantrailing.

I do train her tricks and whatnot through out the day but she’s no longer napping at all now. My collie is struggling to keep up with her now!

I think you have your answer if she isn't settling and is always on the go.

Also, some dogs don't realise they have an ”off” switch. Have a look at these videos on impulse control, and settling.

I can get her to lay down and chill out if I really need to but I’m okay with her being on the go. I have a hectic life and once she’s old enough she will be going a lot more places. - where just battling car sickness right now so I don’t take her out too often in the car apart from getting her use to it!

What about finding a group that do dog activities? In summer it is done 'on wheels' and dogs get to pull and run in orderly manner. Of course they don't learn it over night but dogs are trained for it little by little....some do it in groups and others individually.
I just had a quick look around...and found these https://www.gomushing.com/ Hooner Sled Dog Equipment It might give you some ideas what to do with your dog and start searching with right activity 'lingo'. ;) 'rig racing' looks fun with strong dog(s)!
Regarding about training....it won't be long and you could start very gentle activity harness training if what you are planning to do with your dog would require one. Not so much letting the pup to actually pull much yet, but getting used to being in harness...and getting used to a bike and walking alongside with it..leaning to keep safe distance to it...building up the confidence and behaviour until it is physically able to do more.
Edit to add; I found this for more info... About Us | UK9 Dog Sport Club

Thank you! I’ll definitely have a look around! Shes already in a harness and learning to walk nicely. So I could definitely do some training with a bike and such if I choose to go that route.

Training is great. But if just an energy burn is needed, and humans have no energy of their own to go for a run - technology comes to the rescue for us.

Training on a bike needs a steady dog, I only did it once a week thow, my dogs was hunting fit,

Give this a go

I would also recommend giving scent work a go and see if she enjoys it. It might not seem like they are doing much, but it certainly tires them out: both physically and mentally. As @JoanneF says, it is also something she can start doing now.

If you have a look on the Scent Work UK site Welcome to Scentwork UK — scentworkUK.com under the training videos, there are a couple of videos that show you how you can start at home (you only need a pair of old socks and some cloves!;)).

Yes please let the dog develop

she won’t be doing anything “serious” till she’s 2. I just want to start on basics now while she’s young. Getting her use to equipment and whatnot! Especially while she’s still on the smaller side! She won’t be actively doing anything yet.

We’ve tried this a few weeks ago and she wasn’t too interested but I’ll give it another shot now that she’s a bit older she might be more interested!

Get your bike out now and lead her up and just sit on your bike for 5 , 10 mins a couple of times a week, it will help later on .
