Hi everybody,

We are looking to adopt a hovawart cross, a breed I had never heard of until I came across but the more I read the more I'm fascinated by them. If anyone has experience of these dogs please get in touch.

Ash

Never heard of it, I will take a look but prob another stupid incarnation off some idiot.

Ooom it’s German , it looks a normal dog
, solid, workable, another guarding type

Hello.
I have only met one. Remember him because he looked so much like our dog (a flat coat).
Have you looked at the Hovawart Club of Great Britain site for more information or someone to chat to?

hello and welcome. I know one purebred Hova and he's a delightful dog. Not what you could judge a whole breed on, but shows it's possible.

A cross depends what it's crossed with, and how good an example each parent is.

It really isn't a breed that's a stupid incarnation they are a very old breed about 800 years old from what I have read, nearly died out twice this is of course the pure bred ones not this boy who is a mix. I haven't come across the club of great Britain I'll have a look now.

He came off the street into a romanian kill shelter then got rescued out of their so without doing a test we wouldn't know what he is bred with but we don't really mind he has a good temperament in the kennel and a very friendly lad by all accounts, the rescue are also going to test him with children for us as we have a young baby. And this is all pivoting on if he makes a good recovery from his heart worm.

Given the mental state of some Romanian rescues by the time they've been taken off the street (presumably no early socialisation), kept in kennels, and then shipped over here, personally I'd be really concerned about bringing a large one into a home with a baby - who will soon get to be a crawler, and a toddler, fascinated by soft fur and bright shiny eyes... Obviously you'd always supervise a young child with a dog, but mistakes happen. Some dogs only show their full personality and the impact of their previous experiences when they feel safe and secure in a new family home. And some rescues will tell you anything to get you to take a dog.

This is just my own opinion, based on a couple of overseas rescue dogs I know. And the rescue you're using might of course be exemplary.

I think there’s a few on here who think we shouldn’t be adopting broken foreign animals into our land but that’s For another day.

My experience is the complete opposite both with dog temperaments and how foreign rescues handle the process.

My last dog was a rommie street dog she was physically scarred from her rough life but she was a very affectionate protective dog. She was fine with other dogs yet stood her ground against the dogs that never get any training and just charge around, she was always off lead except near roads with great recall and wouldn't go and bother other dogs or people. The rescue we got her from were very thorough no corners cut or just chucking dogs out the door to anyone. This is a different rescue but someone I know who is heavily involved in rommie rescues it's her very good friend and again their has been no attempt at lying about anything they have been streight up about how he is, what the vet noticed on checks, willing to lead train and harness train as much as they can before travelling, answered my million questions thoroughly, he is fully backed by a UK rescue who will also offer advice and help for free.

I also know a few other romanian dogs and again they are very affectionate but of course their are some dogs that have big problems just like their are in and out of UK rescues.

We understand the risks of a large dog and a baby but we have discussed that and have plans in place so the dog can get away from us all if he needs space and he won't be bothered.

With all that in mind of course their is a little bit of worry about his size and a baby and even his temperament which is why this isn't set in stone yet and I'll be asking for videos and photos of his interactions with children.

I was mainly here to learn about a very interesting breed that has been around for a long time but isn't very well known.

That's good to hear, @Ashbash1991 :) I had in mind a friend's three dogs - one in particular had a terrible trip over here, being left in a crate in a cold dark garage for days at one point, and will never be 'normal'. But you've done your research and know your stuff. Good luck with finding the info you need - and when your dog comes over, we'd love to hear about him!

I get the concerns their are some real horrible people out their looking to capatilise. This place sends dogs by a fully animal licenced transport and it takes 2 days with plenty of stops and it's right to your door. I think alot of people, not saying you, just see the word romanian or Greek and assume it has to be a horrible dog.

Even contemplating fostering with a view to adopt so he has a home and if it doesn't work out for any reason we can keep him and keep training him best we can and he never has to go back into a kennel.

Lots of views and lots of thoughts to process we aren't taking the decision lightly.

I’m really glad you started this thread because I have learnt a lot about Hovawarts today. I ended up reading quite a bit of the information on the UK site and agree with you: they do seem a very interesting breed. I also found out there is a breeder just a few miles away from where we often walk. So, I’m now wondering if the person I see in the distance with the black flat coats is actually walking Hovawarts

I wish you all the best with your rescue and would also love to hear updates, or just more about Hovawarts:)

Yes they do look a nice dog and yes ash I do see the words Romanian and Greek and think just that, because like it or not there’s been some nasty foreign dogs recently treading our parks .

They could very well be! Maybe you could see if you can catch up to him and see what they are like in person for me haha if you Google hovawart training their is some entertaining you tube videos.

Something a bit bonkers happened today I was scrolling through the old posts of him and whilst hovering over a name on Facebook of a woman who wanted to Foster him if he didn't get a home..... Lives in my village! Small world!

If that's what pops into your head then that's what pops into your head can't agree or disagree with it because their are nice and horrible dogs.

Like I said the hova does look a nice dog, until today I’d never heard ov it,
