Ah... there's a difference between 'starting a conversation' (which is a private message) and starting a new thread. To start a new topic, you need to navigate to the forum section you want to post it in (e.g. Support and Feedback), and you should see this:

Yep, I think the forum's had its own Christmas break! I'm not receiving notifications anymore, despite checking/changing my settings. Still, that's no big deal.

Well, got my first notification since my post above today! Something's changed somewhere and for the better
