A few day's ago,Murph came up in lumps & bumps on his face after having been out in the garden first thing in the morning (w00t) .It looked like nettle stings but definitely wasn't.I put some lavender oil on & this seemed to help in reducing the swellings.

He was fine for the rest of the day,but the same thing happened again the next morning with the addition of a few small swellings coming up on his body,at this point i gave him 1/4 of a piriton which got rid of the problem in about half an hour.

I have gone round the garden with a fine tooth comb & removed everything that i thought could cause this, as in a few nettles &a bit of ivy that had started to have new shoots on.

The next morning i followed him around in the garden & he hasn't been near anything that i could see which could cause this, but sure enough,up came his face again :(

As soon as i saw the hint of the lump's coming up,i put a bit of lavender on a wet cotton wool ball & bathed it,&the lumps down very quickly. But later on in the day,he has rubbed himself & made it sore.It started to look like it was a sting of some sort, but i know that nothing has stung him.

Once the swellings have gone,he is fine for the rest of the day & he's been in the garden, rooting around as usual,so i am completely baffled by this.

I haven't put any more lavender on,just in case this has irritated it(though i don't really think it has),has anyone got any idea's on what else i can use?

I shall be taking him to the vet's if i can't heal it up myself, but i don't feel it's bad enough yet ,&i t's worrying me more than it is murph

I forgot to add,i had a similar problem with Flyn last spring.

It wasn't quite as bad as Murph, but went on for about a week, then back to normal & i never did discover what caused it!

Poor Murphy, :huggles: :huggles: is it a flower that is short lived and only comes at this time of year maybe

I hope it heals up quickly :luck: :luck:

You are'nt telling us that the lavendar oil didnt work are you Debs (w00t) :p

What other plants have you in the garden Debbie ??- looks more like a bite but if you know it isnt.

Do let us know if you find out - and :huggles: :huggles: for you and Murphy.

Sorry never seen anything like that before.

Hope he feels better very soon.

Hope you find out what it is soon poor wee guy  I hope it heals up quickly  :luck:

sorry no advice but i hope it goes away soon, poor murphy :huggles: :huggles:

I don't suppose it could be a thistle could it? I trod on one the other day, it was really flat to the ground so I didn't see it. I FELT it thou. Or maybe a tiny gnat/fly thats only about in the morning? Give him a :huggles: from us to help him feel better.

Poor Murph :( They look really sore.

My own experience of lumps and bumps on a whippet is Archie when he kept digging and lying on an ants nest he got horrible little bumps all over his side and nose, they soon went down though and didn't go as red as these. Mind you it could be he is particularly sensitive to ants and he's been sticking his nose in them   Other than that, no ideas - but I hope you get to the bottom of it soon :luck:

Poor Murphy  . Hope you manage to sort out the problem soon.

Definitely not thistles as i haven't got any in the garden.I'd thought about gnat bites, but they're about all day so that's ruled out.

I feel as though i'm going round in circles,it's driving me mad(or madder  )not knowing the cause (w00t)

I'm hoping that the heavy downpour we've had all morning might just wash away the cause, whatever it is!

Janis,I've haven't got any plants in the garden(for obvious reasons, called 5 whippet flower munching monsters  )just all grass & a few trees.

Lesley, the Lavender definitely eased down the swellings, but as this one has come up so badly,i'm now going through the process of elimination.

Jo,i wish it was ant's then i'd know the cause, but like i said,i've been following him around in the morning & he's not been near any.

Very strange indeed ... I'd definitely keep him on the Piriton, he could probably have up to a whole 4mg tablet twice daily if needs be. If it isn't improving in a day or so I'd get it looked at, it looks very angry.

Here's a pic of Flyn when he had the same problem last year. It's just how Murph's face was when it flared up :( .

The 1/4 piriton i gave Murph certainly did the job,& i felt he hasn't needed another since. This sore hopefully is just the aftermath of the swellings & so far so good,no problems today other than his sore nose!

My Hazel gets the same thing but does not rub so it does not look so sore, her's is a bad reaction to certain grass pollen. She gets it sooner in the year though in the fields near us.

On someone's advice,i've put some propolis on it & as you can see from the pic,a lot of the inflammation has already started to go,so fingers crossed!

Trouble is,i'm now scared to let him out first thing in the morning incase it happens again (w00t)

awwww hope he gets better soon and get down to the bottom off this

Hi Debbie,

I hope Murph is soon better

We had a problem with Tegan last year and the year before, she went out as usual in the morning and then started to come up in lumps, she was swelling so quickly i was really worried about her airway closing, as one of her eyes had closed her nose was distorted she looked awful she had these all over her body.

Not knowing what it was i put her straight in the shower and rinsed her as i thought something may have got on her skin, she had no signs of bites or stings, she had to be taken off to the vet for antihistamine injection. but this kept happening we had no idea and to this day have no idea what caused it. the first three times we sought veterinary help, but then on after we have let it take it course, the time it took to go was the same, and i like you use herbal remedies and bathing, to aleviate her symptoms as much as possible.

What ever it was seemed to work its way through her system, we did stop her going out off lead, we kept her on the lead so we knew what she had been near, and it didn't happen while we did that.

Just wondered does he eat the cow poo if they were injected or wormed maybe it could have got into his system?? just a thought.
