I have just found your site we have just lost our beautiful 18 year old Greyhound

and was just looking for something to cheer me up and landed here.
We have a sweet 6yr old black greyhound she totally owns us but she to is
feeling the loss of her best friend and teacher.

I saw your thread and thought I would ask how much different are these

darlings from there larger cousins.

Welcome, Shay. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your greyhound but wow, 18 is a fantastic age!

I'm not sure what thread you are referring to - one about whippets perhaps? Are you thinking of getting a whippet?

yes it was about a Free to good home post lady with hedeghog avatar
posted after finding the add in the hope of finding a good home for the poor thing.

I dont know much about whippets but we were thinking about
a smaller dog before the unexpected death of our girl.
We have had 7 rescue Greys and as we are getting older
we thought a smaller hound would be the way forward.

Hmm, I think you'll have to link to the post - we haven't had any 'Free to a good home' posts in a long time.

no it was a long time ago looking at the date

Hi and welcome and so sorry to hear of your loss also.. aswell as your own heartache it can be really hard seeing your other dog grieve too and miss their companion.

thank you
i don't know much about the care of a whippet so i thought i could learn a bit here
to see if we are suitable to adopt one

I get the impression that they are a bit more caffeined up than greyhounds - but that might just be because the ones people mention are still pups, whereas not so many people have greyhounds from pups.

We’ve only taken on rescued whippets. Our first two were, by comparison, relatively easy to be absorbed into the family. They died a few years ago and it was heartbreaking but that’s the deal one accepts with the territory. We’ve now got Mabel who’s five. We took her on 18 months ago and she did come with certain issues - drove me to the point of despair but we’re getting there slowly - she’s come on helluva long way. I wouldn’t say that they’re any easier or harder than a greyhound, it all depends upon their personality and, if rescued, what they’ve gone through. Just be patient and give them love - but I’m sure that as an experienced pointy face parent you’d know that. There are plenty of whippet rescue centres. Mabel came from J.R. Whippets. Best of luck and please get back to the website should you require any further info.

i was privileged to have Alice as my first she was
a true alpha bitch she trained us well she was the
only one with a triple coat.
She was so damaged burnt, beaten and hurt in so many ways
She was scared to travel but accepted to go with us she would
need to get in the car we took time to get her used to knowing she was safe.
She had issues all of them with time were helped.
She helped chose 3 other greyhounds to join our home.
I think all rescue come to us with some issues and they can take time to resolve.
Some we have rescued were over 8 a few under 4 and a few we had such a
short time but i hope we gave them love peace and way too many treats.
I know I spoil mine.

what is the average size for a whippet?
my biggest girl was 32" at the shoulder and long lol
we gave up on a sofa she fell off it,
the smallest is 27" at the shoulder.

Height to the shoulder approx 21”. Mabel shares a sofa with me although she does stretch out and pushes me but no where near the length of a greyhound. Put it this way, on Sunday she had a session and I had to carry her into W.H.Smith’s. They’re a smashing breed and we’ve had no problems with letting them off the lead. Where are you located?

thank you
im near Heathrow
we never let the grey hounds off too many idiots
near us with no control over there dogs.
One large vet bill from a dog that attacked
and owner was too far away to get it.
we have some nice walks near us so it was never an issue.
