Hello Everyone

I've just found this site and have been reading through the posts and looking at all the gorgeous pooches.

I have a 2 year old whippet cross (Lurcher?) called Beans, we got her from a shelter and they have no idea what mixture she is. What do you think?

She is absolutely wonderful and we love her very much. However, recently she has started being funny with other dogs - particularly when she is on a lead - and has been agressive to a few we have met.

We are using a Halti when walking her in the hope that she will learn to not react when she walks past another dog. Do you think this will work? Has anyone got any other ideas about what we can do to stop her being like this? Thanks.

She looks very pretty, but the picture is a bit small to see what cross she is.

Was there something particular that made be start being funny? Was she attacked or frightened? It might be worth going to a training class to resocialise her. :thumbsup:
 
Welcome to k9, as Claire said your pic is a bit small to get a good view but a lovely fawn by the looks of things :)
 
welcome to k9 :cheers: and as claire says training classes are a great idea to change anti social behaviour or if necessary refer her to a psychologist..good luck :luck:

Not sure why the other picture is so small!

She started being funny when she had been in kennels whilst we were on holiday. I presume another dog must have gone for her whilst she was tied up somewhere :(

She was fine when off her lead until recently and now you just never know whob she is oging to like/dislike. I did take her to a class but it was awful becasue she just wanted to savage all the other dogs and wouldn't stop barking!

My two are pedigree whippets and still bark at the others at the dog class (w00t)

I would try another class and at first just sit at he back and give her trets if shes quiet it is more liky she is scared of other dogs and needs to bulied her confidnce back up. I think any good traner will help but to be on the safe side pop a muzzel on her aswell becoues if your getting tens and wonde up becous of her behavour she may be picking it up and its makes things worres if you know she carnt hurnt another dog you may start to relaxs and and hopefully so should she. Good luck with her she looks beatifull and I hope you get her happey again soon

Sounds like she might have had a tough time in kennels! You might want to try an individual training class so she gets used to the environment before going into a class with other dogs, then maybe start by just watching like fallenangel said, until she feels a bit more confident.

I try an ignore undesirable behaviour as much as possible (unless it's dangerous of course), because if you get cross / worried and start yelling she might think there is definitely something to worry about. If you just ignore her barking and pretend you are chilled out, then she will hopefully take her cue off you. :thumbsup: (plus lots of treats!!)

My lot bark at dogs,,only since the staffie attack though :(

Training class's will help :thumbsup:
 
She looks a lovely red fawn.

How sad that she has changed since being in kennels.... it really does sound as though she might have been attacked by a dog whilst she was confined.

Could you try introducing her to some friend's dogs who are calm and reliable to get her confidence back?

Hi have you tried getting in touch with the kennels explaining what the dog has bn liek since you got her home obv stating that your not blaming them in any way but it might give you some insight as to why she is behaving the way she is, might find it easier to solve if you know what started it.

Also persever at the classes if you feel confident in the instructors so that u can kinda relax not easy i know when ur dog is noisy but it will eventually settle down take some of the nicest tastiest hardest treats and just sit in the corner saying quiet and feeding her eventually you will see a difference as my whippet is or was the exact same it just takes time and patience.

I'm having the same problem with my whippet - although his has got steadily worse (he's a teenager!) rather than happened suddenly.

I've been tearing my hair out about it - til another K9er suggested i put some dried peas in a jar/bottle to take out on walks. When he barks at another dog i whip them out of my pocket and shake them at him - and i must say the distraction is working very well :cheers:

i would try ringing the kennels first to see if you can find out what happened, as if she has been attacked it might be a good idea to wait for her to get her confidence back before you try it - good luck and let us know how it goes :luck: :luck:
 
hi ,she is lovely, and does look like a whippet/greyhound to me, hope your problem is sorted out quickly, you just dont know what goes on in these kennels.
 
Thanks for your advice everyone. I'll certainly look into training classes again in the hope that socialising her will make her realise that most dogs are nice! :))

We certainly won't be putting her in kennels again :(
