So. Following Alfie's second pneumothorax, he had major surgery to remove parts of both lungs. His remaining lungs are still covered in small blisters called bullae which can burst and release air into his chest cavity which will cause further pneumothorax. We are convinced that his previous pneumothorax were caused by bullae bursts due to him exercising more than he usually does so now our four year old lab who loves to play, chase, explore etc will have to take things easy from now on.

Poor boy. What about starting him on something like scentwork which will give him an interest and tire his brain without physically exerting him? Talking Dogs Scentwork are nationwide  (although not widespread in Scotland) and have a good reputation.

Great suggestion from Joanne. Any dog can do scent work. The Talking Dogs Scentwork organisation is run by Pam MacKinnon. She is Scottish and I am sure would jump at any chance to run a workshop in Scotland. She has gone as far the Western Isles to spread the word. All you need are about six dogs and she will run a workshop. She has also written a couple of books. The first is called Talking Dogs Scentwork the Manual. When I remember the name of the latest I will post it.

While you are waiting why not log on to You Tube and take a look at Kiko Pup. It is full of good tips to clicker train dogs. You can choose from lots of static tricks to teach your dog. Some of them are useful, like picking up dropped items for you, opening and shutting doors, finding the phone etc.

Not sure if they operate in your area but Dog Aid teach pet dogs to help their disabled owners around the house. An APDT trainer would also be able to help you with all of the above training.

Thank you. It's Alfie our four year old labrador who's had all the major surgery and who needs to take thing easy. By this we mean moderate off lead exercise but no more ten mile walks or long periods of swimming.......which he absolutely loves.

No more than 10 miles is still a lot!
