I’m going mad. Looks like pup has Giardia again. Turning ocd with cleaning.lack of sleep as the diarrhoea only hits him at night. Been told his stomach should get tougher as he gets older but just can’t see this happening. He’s nearly 6 months and got the all clear fortnight ago but symptoms returned. Sample sent off again. To top this all off not covered by insurance as it started within the 14 day window of start of policy. Anyone been thru the same thing. Please give me hope.
 
Oh lord. Murphy had it at about 6 months. Its made OH really ocd about where we walk and Murphys paws are washed off after our walks at the woods or common. Murphy came through ok although he did lose a lot of weight and refused to eat the same food again even though the vet proved it was giardia. It is totally exhausting but you will get through it..
 
It's a pity @gipsysmum2 doesn't visit now as I think I remember her dog having had it more than once. Can it not sometimes give a false negative so it looks like it's gone but actually isn't?

It doesn’t always show in a sample best to get a sample from as many poos as possible.

How long did he have it for and what advice/ treatment were you given

Just looked it up he was sick for about 3 weeks . He had injection of albipen rimadyl and cerenia then after 3 days back to the vet for another injection of antibiotics and he had antibiotics at home for 10 days and because he lost so much weight and wasnt eating he had a gel suppliment like astronaut food for a week to make sure he got all his nutrition..
 
From memory (!) it needs treating with Panacur wormer. It is a parasite. The Panacur wormer is given as a course over, I think, about five days but you can give it for longer. The vet should ask for several poo samples as it can be missed from just one.
It is something that is in the environment and, i would imagine, makes the dogs bowels inflamed to an extent that any little thing will upset them again.
My dog had had it before I got him but I treated him again with Panacur, anyway, as he had been in a dirty kennel environment before I picked him up. I saw the entry about Giardia on his kennel record so did not involve the vet. I just ordered the Panacur and treated him myself. It did the trick for the Giardia but his bowels were always sensitive to pressure and he could not have any bulk in his diet or the pressure would make him poo overnight. Not diarrhoea just solid poo after eating things like marrowbones or bulky chews. He was fine on dry dog food. He always produced many small solid poos and a vet nurse told me that a dog of hers was the same after it contracted Giardia from a stray cat. Almost as if the bowel had "shrunk".
Good luck with your dog. I was getting up every night and letting mine out "just in case" :)

I did panacur when i first got him. He’s also had a stronger treatment from the vets, last time for two weeks.
