my dogs always free run , i know they are show dogs BUT first and foremost they are whippets (w00t) , i couldnt own a whippet and not let it run even the pups are haring round like loonies but they know there limits and sleep when they are tired -_-

Its good to see 31 free run and only 1 doesn't...sad for their dogs though

Can see no reason to have a glorious breed like we are blessed with and not free run them...its what they were born to do

physically maybe not, but unless they have large runs or a garden to run in, I find it sad not to free run them...when you look on the face of a whippet running they are at their happiest, why have a sight hound and not free run them....might as well get a chihuahua

i have always run my dogs free on the beach near where i live

but after one of them breaking his leg in January2008

I have been very reluctant to do so

I am just feeling a little more comfortable doing so again now after nearly a year--

hopefully can get back to what was the norm soon

everthing i know about racing dogs i learnt off my dad who was one of the best greyhound men in the area,it was he who allways said if a dog is kept on the lead when it comes race it will want to run. just look at my record with the good dogs iv'e had ,there must be something in it. :thumbsup:

I'm not saying that it didn't work for you or that you are not a very knowledgable man, I'm talking about the happiness and well being of the dogs, my whippet will never win a race but she is very happy and well adjusted with her hours of free running a week.

If a dog was bred to run, surely it should be allowed to do just that, not just for a few minutes up a track when the owner decides but daily as a natural part of life...sorry just my opinion

wish i had time 2 let mine off every day. they do have a fair sized back garden to roam around in now though :thumbsup:

i agree with what you say they are bred to run,a staffie or a pit bull is a breed that wants to fight but you would'nt let them of the lead .( some idiots do )

iam not saying they were kept on the lead all their life, when they retired they did have all the freedom they wanted.

So do mine, they get about 40-45 minutes part on and part off lead along the edge of the farmers field having a good sniff about and getting muddy. After that we go to the park or around 20 minutes where Bradley plays with his ball on a rope and enjoys rolling in stuff the foxes leave behind :x . I get through a lot of tomato ketchup!!!

I also try to get some road walking in as well.

Bradley as bitten by a GSD two weeks ago in the park, the owner of the GSD grabbed it and whacked it several times with a chain lead before running out of the park. Brad was fine, he had a puncture wound on his back leg. He didn't worry though. I haven't found the GSD owner yet as there are several in the village.

I don't think a Staffy fighting is quite in the same league as a Whippet enjoying the great outdoors...but thats a different conversation altogether :thumbsup:

I'm glad to hear your Whippets got to run in later life, I really know nothing about racing etc but I do really believe, as you might have guessed, that dogs should be allowed to run as long as they are safe :thumbsup:
