Looking for recommendations. I was just wondering what is the best flea treatments for puppies and dogs? I got my first from the vet my pups nearly 10 weeks old. And also are flea collars effective or a waste of money and I think she is to young for a flea collar at the minute

I'm interested in the replies too. Harri will never have one of the new generation systemic flea treatments again so I'm currently researching myself.

I've just ordered some "Billy No Mates" a herbal tick and flea treatment which has some good reviews

I did read somewhere but I cant remember where that the best ones are the ones prescribed by the vets

I use Seresto collars on Jasper as he hates having spot-ons applied and the tablets can make him throw up. They're brilliant IMO - he picked up about four ticks over the past two summers whereas previously he was picking up about four a day.

The most effective ones are prescription only but do some research before you give them. I regret not doing so myself.

I was looking at this - does he wear a normal collar as well?

Yes, he does - the Seresto collar wouldn't be suitable for attaching a lead. I guess if you use a harness you could attach a tag to the Seresto collar, but whether it would be robust enough for you to grab if you needed to I don't know.

In most of the photos I have of him it seems to disappear under his regular collar, but you can see it - just - in this one:

We have vets prescribed chewy tablets every 3 months, sorry I forget the name, but so far so good.

advocate dog treatment is one that I have always recommended

Afraid for all my love of alternative/herbal options I have always used advocate from the vets, especially as I have boarders so I can't take the risk. My mate went down the herbal road with her dog and ended up with a flea infestation in her house aswell as dog! I think your environment has to be taken in to consideration too..
Just a by the by if you do find a tick on your dog and can't do the push, twist and pull method(anti-clockwise I think) you can cover it in vaseline( or butter someone else uses)and wait till it drops off, unless it's in a place where the dog can lick obviously! ( I actually add teatree oil to vaseline just to make sure!)

Is that Milbemax? Sure there's another one too but can't remember that one!

Is that Milbemax?

No, that's just a worming tablet.

you can cover it in vaseline

That isn't recommended now (it used to be) because it can make the tick regurgitate the blood it has already ingested back into the host bloodstream, and that is believed to increase the chance of Lyme disease.

Some homemade or herbal things can help some are plain daft. One woman I knew swore by water blessed by a medium.. needless to say she.. her kids ..her dog.. and her house were flea bait... With Murphy I use advantix recommended by my vet. We have a lot of ticks in the woods here and i am not putting my trust in buttermilk, although he does have his garlic bonbons..

I tried rubbing diatomaceous earth into my cat's coat - my nose stung and I had a sore throat for a day or so. Natural or not, if it does that to me, I'm not putting it on my cat!

Ooh, didn't know that about the vaseline, that's just nasty! thankyou.. The milbemax was something a couple of my boarders took aswell as another tablet which must have been for the fleas but can't remember it's name..

According to local belief... Honey smeared behind the ears repells fleas, motor oil smeared on the coat repells fleas , yogurt or buttermilk given to the dog daily stops ticks and fleas. Apple cider vineger added to their water cures water infection and repells fleas and stops worms..

I think I will stick the the pipet.. I dont overdose my dogs but once fleas get hold its awful , been there done that and have no desire to chance it again.

I'm wondering how effective the herbal one will be too but I want the isoxazolines to clear completely from his system (which could take 5-12 months according to one study I found).
