Just a quick question - I'm sure I read on here many moons ago that pumpkin can help firm up poo a bit (dogs, not mine ). Did I dream it? Have I got the wrong food?

I need to firm up Jimbo's poos a bit, vet suggested adding Weetabix now and then, but I'm sure I read something on here but can't find it now.

Thanks :)

I use butternut squash and bonios are great for firming poos up ;)

I use pumpkin on my boy's to help them when their poo is soft and it works great, just make sure if you buy it in a tin it's pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie.

Just a small amount to firm up poo. A generous amount helps shift constipation.

Ive heard pumpkin as well .. However since changing to 100% raw we have no need of any poo cures.
Murphys problems seemed to have been cured, no runny poo no itching. George has no flaky skin and a lot more muscle tone and small poo too.

How fantastic @Mad Murphy, that's really good news. :D:D

It is for Murphy and our wallets.. The vet had suggested allergy testing at between 500-700euro.
Not just a shock for the wallet but Murphy does not like strangers so it would have been awful for him too.
We had apoquel for his itching at €30 a month, now he only needs a tablet when the grass is mowed. We had tried the vet diet at eye watering prices and zero effect so raw is an absoloute godsend.
George looked fine but had a coat with more dandruff than a snowglobe now there is nothing.
And we have gone from bouts of liquid poo to poo more like owl pellets. Plus very happy dogs..

Butternut squash and sweet potato work well too.

OK, so now I'm deciding what pumpkin product to buy, other than an actual pumpkin, but I can get one of them if that's the way to go. Doing an online search at local supermarkets, this is what I've found:

Pumpkin Puree
An actual dog food came up in the search!
Pumpkin Pie Filling

I'd appreciate advice if any of these are suitable please, together with any views on the amount Jimmy should be fed.

@JudyN - sorry, didn't see you post earlier. He's on his usual Gentle dog food as recommended by @JoanneF here ages ago. His poo has always been OK, with the odd hard one, but mainly quite soft (not squidgy(. He had to have his glands expressed recently which is what has kicked all of this off.

As usual, thanks in advance to all the helpful members on here - glad to see things are going from strength to strength whilst I've not been able to contribute lately (blame work ).

Sainsbury's - Please enable cookies or JavaScript Looks fine. You can open the tin, divide it into portions, and freeze them.

The naturo just contains pumpkin which might not be enough, and the pie filling (I didn't actually look at the link tbf) probably has sugar in it.

Another alternative, if it's easier, is to buy frozen butternut squash from the supermarket. It's sold in bags of squash pieces and might not be quite as effective as pumpkin but it's pretty close.

Thanks all for the tips. Will try the puree and report back!

OK, so finally managed to track down the pumpkin puree on Friday, and he's had a few small portions since then. I'm not sure if its made a difference yet, but we'll keep with it until we've used this up and so how it goes.

Do people really eat this stuff? I tried it and it's awful! Jimmy seems to love it though.

I actually make pumkin and peanut butter biscuits for my 3, it actually has been helping Marley's colitis touch wood!
And yep it tastes vile

Im glad its not just me.. I heard so many Americans raving about pumpkin so a few years ago I bought one and made pumpkin pie and pumpkin soup.. Ghastly stuff. Luckily my neighbour loved it and even bought me another pumpkin and asked if I would make more pies for him and his mates ! No accounting for taste I suppose.

That's why pumpkin spice is such a big thing in the US!

Ah, glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like it then! Jimbo's been on it for about a week now, he has a heaped teaspoon with his breakfast (from a frozen batch). I don't think it's made much of a difference - should I wait longer for it to take effect, or am I giving him too much?
