But getting back to the S shape.  Someone suggested we NOT mention "s" as it is confusing to trainees who look for a more extreme underline and topline. 
Thoughts?

Personally I would associate an 'S' shape outline with Italian Greyhounds and not Whippets. IGs that haven't got that lovely curvy outline tend to look like Miniature

Whippets and vice versa.

I want to see a flowing but much flatter topline with just the gentle arch over the loin and definitely not falling away over the croup!!!

I totally agree regarding the not falling away over the croup - there are far to many steep croups. I wish I could draw what I am trying to say.... we also refer to the sweeping curves & S shapes on the pointers & they are by no means IG in style, and in fact not even whippet like (w00t)

So there you go - INTERPRETATION from one person to another is clearly quite open. The whippet IMO is a series of gracious curves - the "S" as such is not really an "S" afterall - it is more of an expression - totally agree with the slight rise above the loin & length - however, there does need to be consistent flow, we see to many that are far to sharp neck into shoulder, big dips behind the withers & the are either starting to rise to early & being to roachy or the complete opposite where the dogs are flat & square bumbed.

The whippet is a tough breed to judge as there are so many "types" around, quite hard for the up n comings not to get confused or fixated on one particular point.

Good luck with your newbies - I am sure you will do an awesome job. For me, the shape of the whippet is important & all forms of exaggeration are to be avoided - therefore the "S" shape is more like it has had an iron on it - your club may be right about staying away from the "S" shape for the trainees as it does lead to quite a variance in interpretation. I don't mind if you want to fly me over so I can show you exactly what I mean with my hand signals (w00t) (w00t)

Maybe "S" shape is confusing, but I think good "tuck-up" is essential, as is topline that is not flat, and does not flatten on move. What is the ideal arch can be open to interpretation, but flat is flat = incorrect.

You're ALL welcome but I don't think the Club's coffers can spread to airfares but I'm sure we can stretch out for some tea and coffee. .

Seriously though, if anyone has an example of great topline and underline (you can cut off heads, rear and legs), we'd love to see it. Anne-Marie and I are still searching for this. We can find great underlines and flat toplines, and great toplines with steep, sharp underlines.

As you say it can all be interpreted differently by different people,but personally I don't like a whippet to have too much "rise" and run the risk of looking like an IG but I also don't like "tabletops" either.

I have attached a pic of a topline and underline that I like. Though others may feel differently as it is all down to personal taste whilst staying within the standard (or the persons interpretation of the standard!!)
