Dog Wont Pass Leading Dog

Hi,

We have two gorgeous whippet dogs. One 20 months, one 15 months. They have run together in the fields since they were able to.

The 15 month old one has significant potential for racing, and has considerable pace but he doesn't seem to want to pass the leading dog/bitch but rather runs full pelt until he gets to the dog at the front (normally 30 yards max no matter what the start) then wants to play - absolutely no hint of agression from him, but he wants to play with the leading dog.

If they dont want to play then he'll drop back and accelerate to their other side and see if they then want to play. Consequently he gets beat for most races which is a bit frustrating as he seems to be quite fast since he can catch up with the leading whippet with ease.

Solos dont seem to help as he only puts in a token effort/time as he is dis interested. Away from the racing he is keen to chase and would chase a crisp bag blowing in the wind if he saw it at half a mile away!.

In the end, it doesnt really matter to us as first and foremost he is a pet, and thats what matters most. We were just wondering if there was anything we could do to make him more interested in getting to the lure first.

one of ours wasnt interested in the lure and the advise we got from mark roberts was to attach a chunk of meat onto the lure which we did and the results where immediate,but saying that our girl was very food orinentated.

As Trish has said put food in a lure for her (an onion bags good for this or the net bag you get with washing tablets)

even put it in the bags when you feed her for a week or so that way she associates the bag with food (something nice) she'll enjoy ripping it open to get to her food inside.

once youve got her chasing in solos keenly only then try her with another dog, but find the slowest you can something that she will be able to pass very easyly, keep running her against slow dogs for several weeks till she gets the idea she can pass the other dog then run her against slightly faster dog ect ect but in the early stages avoid running her with your own as shes used to playing with your own dogs.

good luck with her i'm sure with patiance she will get the idea.

Thanks to all for the advice. Seems to be working so far. Started feeding him with some cold meat once he gets to the lure. Only managed to do this for one week as the racing has been cancelled for frost.

He found 0.60 of a second between the first race/feed and the second so it seems to be working. We'll see what tommorow brings.

In the meantime i'll leaving him sleeping/dreaming about his racing tommorow.
