Doberman puppy countdown - opinions and advice needed!

Haha, I will see how she is in water after her jabs!! We had our first trip to the vets today, she was a little whiney in the car there, but she got so much cooing from the nurses she was on top form when we were waiting.

She really didn't like the slippery vet table but she was transfixed with a old boy dog waddling around the waiting area, she was desperate to play, felt bad keeping her on lap. Took her in one of those dog bags with head out, well head and front paws, she's a big lump, 8 weeks and 8kg! It'll last all of another week I reckon until she's far too big, but it will have done the job at keeping her safe before jabs kick in. She squishes into it in the living room and knaws away at the lining, but at least its at the bag and not anything else.

Last night was the first night we've not had a whine at 5am, hubby and I both get up at 6am anyway as he commutes, she's there wagging her tail when I open the kitchen door, pleased as punch when I stepped straight into a little puddle. Good morning Poppy.

Saying all of that, she's been on the planet all of 8 weeks and only 3 and a bit days with us, so I'll forgive her just now.

Thinking of closing crate door tonight, up til now she is in secure kitchen with crate open, paper in a corner (dry as a bone, naturally) - we thought we could try to get her dry at night but would this be too soon? She's already learnt SIT and PAW, maybe she'll clock on to holding it in? Spoke to breeder and Poppy's brother Remy has been going in to his crate to pee, with owner coming down every 2 hours at night, they've had dobes before but not from pups, I feel quietly smug she (and us!) Are doing ok!

Awwww, she's trying so hard for you, little love.

Continence is partly down to her learning what is appropriate and partly down to nerve and bladder development and she's still really young to make it all the way through the night without an accident. Did the breeder not discuss getting up to take her out once or twice during the night until she's a bit older?

You're doing fine with her- I can say that without a shadow of a doubt that you are. You have got her for the right reasons and have done lots of learning and adapting your lives to meet her needs. She will, of course, challenge you but that's normal and natural and one of the very good reasons that forums exist to share stories and ask advice :) I can't pretend to be an expert, but I'm a fairly good sounding board and I'm sure that there are some far more experienced people around these parts who will have more insightful answers than mine :)

Aw thanks for the reply, I think I am rushing a bit maybe, I'm just so excited to have her around I really need to remember how little she is. In the last hour she's learnt to bark, it just came out, I think even she was surprised, god help us for tonight!

Breeder seemed happy with crate open and paper on the floor I guess that's what the litter was used to, but if taking her out would be better I can try that!

Tired poppet being a very good hot water bottle for my feet currently, its been a hectic day.

Hi everyone! Thought I'd update, lil Poppy is not so little anymore, she had 10week jab on saturday and is 10.2kgs already! She's learning quite a bit, we are closing crate at night with her paper and water in and she has been completely dry, straight outside in the morning for 1 and 2s, although we're still, having wees in the house but she's alerting us most of the time. We're off camping over the bank holiday, with 15week English pointer, which should be fun! Photo of her this morning, cant believe how much she has grown! Btw that is a huge ikea wall clock behind her.

Will definitely take piccys! She's powered down for an afternoon nap now - I felt terrible earlier, she was whining for attention then a big bark came out, I told her NO and then she circled round for half a pee on the carpet before I could open the back door - poor little thing was just alerting me! What a terrible dobermum I am.
