I have 2 whippies age 6 & 7. The youngest has always been rather barrell chested and a different shape but she is definately overweight now. They have 1-2 hours exercise a day comprising 2 walks/runs/chasing the ball/swimming in the sea etc. They have 1 or 2 tins of food a day (between them) and a few Harringtons biscuits, and rather too many snacks, I'm sure.

I am willing to change their diet completey, maybe reverting back to raw which I did a few years ago, but need a bit of advice about the amounts e.g. weighing out.

All help welcome. The crunch came when another whippet owner asked if she was pregnant :(

Feed less and cut down on the snacks

Be cruel to be kind

A raw carrot every day is a good substituite snack / treat

Just like people some have a different metabolism from others and need less food

 :D

It sounds as though they get enough exercise; you probably need to cut down on the treats. Green beans are lowcal and most dogs like them cooked.

Also if she "looks pregnant", check for cysts or tumours

I think the pregnant comment by another owner was a bit mean! They had their booster injections today and the vet said she was healthy (no cysts or tumours - just belly fat!). They are now both eating raw food and a light biscuit as a back up - no treats, no human food. Fingers crossed :)
