One of my coworkers brings her 11 week old lab puppy into work every day which means i cant bring mine in. she recently offered to leave him home in a crate so i could bring Baxter in again.

Is this even safe? I didn't think an 11 week old puppy would be able to cross his paws alone all day.

I gently pushed her on it and she said "Oh yeah he's crate trained."

Seriously?

I never crate trained Baxter but i always thought that you had to like.... build up to a full day. baby puppys cant cross their paws that long!

I don't believe in caging puppies/dogs for whole days just for convenience.
Crates do have their uses, but it seems so wrong to cage a dog for soo long.
Dogs should not be caged like rabbits and guinea pigs.

And this is why I hate crates... Sorry to everyone who uses them well but there are no controls and they are misused like this all the time.
I used to go to one lady as a home help and her dogs were in their crates all day the kids would let the dogs out for a wee before school and then recrate them until the dad came home at 6pm, at which time he let them out again. This went on for months before I got there and so I risked my job by walking her dogs before I left her house.. I did that for 2 years while she recovered and her kids got lazier.
In other houses Ive been to Ive seen similar and been told 'not to get them used to being out'.. and yes I have made several secret calls to animal welfare.

I wouldn't leave an 11-week-old pup for a full day out of a crate! Maybe she uses puppy pads but it's still not right.

I don't suppose she could bring the pup and the crate into work (or even buy a crate to keep at work) so the pup can be securely contained as far away from Bax as needed, then when you're able to take Bax to another area, or for a lunchtime walk, she could let the pup out for a bit?

Bax does really well with the puppy actually. it just was deemed that given the size of the room and the number of people who come in and out of it and what we're DOING in said room, there's a one dog cap on the number of dogs allowed in the room.

That is hardly an excuse to leaving a puppy in a cage all day!

My dogs & puppies get to come to work with me and still are crated up to 12 hours besides getting a bathroom break on and off. I wouldn't trust an 11 week old puppy not to have to piddle or poo depending on the length of time. Which is uncomfortable for them and can make potty training an issue.

.

An 11-WO pup really cannot spend a whole working day *outside* a crate safely, either, unless they are in a meticulously puppy-proofed room of their own, that they CAN’T get out of, to be free in other parts of the house.
Pups can & will chew electrical cords & get shocked / burned, eat toxic substances or swallow inedible objects, gnaw on furnishings & swallow fringe, string, thread, splinters, etc. They’re a danger to themselves, & a hazard to personal possessions and the fabric of the house.
So I can see why he’s crated.

OTOH, he needs at the very minimum, a potty break or preferably TWO of them, 3 hours after she departs for work, & again 3 hrs after that one. The rule for housetraining is age in months + 1 = max hours between SCHEDULED potty trips, & he has another week to go before he’s 3- O, so his age in months is 2 + 1 = 3 hrs max between potty trips.

If she can’t hire a petsitter or dogwalker to come by for potty trips, praps a neighbor could come by, or a responsible teenager she knows, or a relative who’s retired would take Pup out...

Trading weekday coverage for weekend time with another dogowner is one way, they would take her pup out for 15-mins to potty, 2x a day M - F, & in exchange, she takes their dog out for an hour on Sats & Sundays. That also gives her an older dog to socialize her pup with. Both benefit. :)

So the pup was confined all day today and it did NOT go well apparently *shocked expression* he's also apparently going to be crated all day tomorrow to... this is going to go SPECTACULARLY

I wouldn’t leave any dog in. Crate all day , let alone a puppy, can’t you both bring the dogs in to work, or why not bring his crate and give him time outs

The room i work in is fairly small and has a high volume of people coming in and out and walking around. it was decided that only one dog at a time is allowed, particularly where Bax is concerned because he's so high energy and is running around all the time adding to the chaos.

got some info yesterday and it looks like bax is just going to be crated at home indefinitely given that the puppy did so poorly. im kind of ticked but given the situation i feel like thats better for the puppy even if it sucks for bax. bax is an adult and can take staying at home, clearly the puppy cant.

Pretty crap situation all round, but fair play to you.. Maybe when the pup is a bit older and more able to be left you can share the days your dogs get to come to work?

is this an office job? Very surprised that they allow dogs on the premises. The owner should have thought about what she was going to do with the dog while she was at work before she got it. I'm a dog sitter/walker and I look after some lovely dogs and all the owners care deeply about them. They are very lucky.
