Colours!?

Ok another "thinking" question from me.. I have searched on the net, tried to see as many colours there are.. and just wondering in general ways, which colours are most popular and what colours are there, and what colours are accepted in the show ring?

Are you talking about whippets or all dogs. If you're talking about whippets it might be easier to say what colours they DON'T come in As far as I know there is no merle gene, no true black & tan although some heavily sabled fawns look B & T, no brown ummm that's all I can think of.

According to the standard any colour or mixture of colours is accepted.

I'm not absolutely sure but I think if you shaved them you'd find it's actually brindle underneath. When brindle dogs have long hair it's harder to see it as brindle.

I don't think so. Also, there are grizzle smooths:

If anything, I would say it looks a lot like what is known as sabling in whippets, but I don't think it is quite the same, is it?

Owning Salukis, and having friends with Salukis and Afghans, my understanding is grizzle, brindle and domino are patterns and not colours.

In the case of brindle, it's a dominant pattern.

Quite right. And isn't grizzle and domino genetically the same pattern, only on different breeds (with different coat lengths, obviously)?

There is also no pepper&salt colour in Whippets, as there is no agouti (if I spell it correct ) gene.

What colour is the most popular... difficult to say, it depends. E.g. some of my friends can't imagine whippet of other colour than white or white/black.
