It's been ages since I did a Chloe update so it's long overdue but I also need some advice. The good news first, we've finally managed to get Chloe up to a proper weight. She has matured into a lovely little girl, passed dog training classes with flying colours and is a real sweetie. I've posted the before and after pics below. I'm still amazed that she survived and has improved so much.

Now for the thing I need some help with. Chloe was never housetrained. She had been locked in a garage and starved before she came to me and had missed out on the puppy housetraining bit. I do a mixture of work from home and office but my timetable varies quite a bit. On the days when I go into the office Busta and Chloe get left at home until lunchtime, I come home for an hour and I'm back at 5.30pm. They get walked morning, lunchtime and evening and get loads of exercise. If I'm going to work late or have to travel I have a lovely pet sitter who comes in. Chloe is still having accidents when I'm out. If I work from home she never wees in the house, so I never get the opportunity to tell her 'no' put her outside and praise her when she goes etc. She has only wee'd twice in my presence and both times I followed the above proceedure. There have been times when I've worrked from home but got absorbed in work and not let them out into the garden until later than I would return if I was at the office and she can hold fine. It doesn't seem to be linked to stress, no other signs of separation anxiety, she just needs a wee and has one. Always in the hallway. I've started putting puppy training pads down and she will happily use them (provided Busta hasn't chewed it or moved it to the wrong part of the house!). She just hasn't 'got it' that the hallway is not an appropriate place to go to toilet. Recently there has been a double whammy as Busta has started to scent mark each time Chloe wees so now the both of them are weeing (although Busta only does a squirt). One carpet is wrecked already and I've had to pull it up. Lino is being installed next week hopefully which will make it easier to clean up. Also Busta is booked in at the vets this wednesday to be castrated. He has always been perfect in the house trianing department and he's not weeing, he's just scent marking after Chloe wees so maybe the snip will stop that. I'm at the end of my tether. We are renting this house and I can't afford to keep putting in new flooring. I have owned dogs since I was little and have never had one that didn't pick up housetraining quickly and easily including when I've taken in rescue dogs. I cleaned up wee most days last week and I've had to clean up wee twice today and it's only Monday. I cried my eyes out (again) today and then thought maybe some of you K9ers might have some new suggestions I could try. This situation is really getting me down. No point getting upset and doing nothing to resolve it. Any suggestions gratefully received.

bless you i really cant offer any advice really the only thing i will say is have you had her checked out just in case she has a water infection she probably hasnt but you never know i think getting buster castrated is a good idea too.

on a more positive note what a wonderful job you have done i remember you getting her so well done you try not to get too disheartened im sure there is a solution chloe is a very lucky girl to have found you so try and stay positive :huggles: :luck:

You have done a wonderful job with Chloe, she is such a beautiful girl now. Have you thought of crate training? It is said to be the answer to difficult housetraining problems because they don't want to wee in their crate. The theory is that you only need to keep them in the crate apart from outings for 7 days, and then they will have 'got' it and formed new habits. There are plenty of websites with good advice if you google 'crate training' and also books to help. Good luck!

Hi Sue,

I hadn't thought of crating her during the day. She is crate trained as they sleep in crates at night but I've never used them during the day. Do other people use them during the day?

You haven't waffled, you've got a problem and your asking for help :huggles:

I keep looking at the pictures it's so hard to believe its the same girl.

Sada was very hard to housetrain and reduced me to tears of frustration

more than once, so i know a little of how you feel.

The crate training worked in the end

Aw Vicky, how proud you must be of Chloe, what a beautiful girl she is

I posted only last week that Ben is tinkling in the house and then reading everyone elses messages it seems some of their are too....

Try not to get to upset ... :huggles:

Sometimes they forget themselves.... or in Ben's case, we think he just can't hold it for long.

The little monkey wee'd on the lino in the utility and then decided to chew it, so yesterday after a few weeks of waiting for him to get over it... we bought new and put it down... he only chewed the bit that shows under the door in the kitchen

Anyho, lovely to see Chloe, she really is gorgeous

she has turned into such a beauty

we have a crate so when ever we are out or bedtime, it has worked wonders

good luck, :luck:

a pic of busta would be good to :- "

What an amazing difference you have made to Chloe, she looks wonderful :huggles:  .

I have a six month old puppy who used to wee in the kitchen before I crated her overnight and during the day if she was left for more than an hour or two. It did the trick for her :D . She was capable of holding on but if there was a chance to go on the doormat or whatever then she wouldn't bother holding it :- " .

What an amazing difference in Chloe, she looks so healthy now, a real credit to you. She is very beautiful  :huggles:

What a a big difference...youve done wonders... :huggles: Shes gorgeous.

I used to crate train mine when they were puppies, but you could try crate training her during the day. Maybe she just needs to feel safe and secure, and the crate may just be the thing. No harm to give it a try....leaving her for short sessions then getting longer and longer.

Sounds like Buster is scent marking where shes weed too..

has she been in season lately, or possibly coming in.

 congratulations vicky she is a credit to you

i think its just her being lazy tbh......i started leaving grace out of her crate in the day when i went shopping or to the school.....ect..she got in to the habit of peeing, every time, even if only left for half an hour

so she is back in a crate like the others when i go out.....the other problem ive had is.....for a year they have all slept in the sitting room, some nights they would wake me to go out this was starting to become a regular habit every night ..not ideal -_- , but then the dirty little sods started pooing in the kitchen :x :x

so needless to say they are all back in crates at night, except violet who is in my bed still

and i dont hear a peep out of them all night...and they never stir to go out at night

Hiya Vicky,

How lovely Chloe looks, she is a credit to you.

I would crate Chloe for a while.I know she won,t like it,but it will save you a lot of stress in the end.You can always put Bustas bed next to the cage,so that she doesn,t feel alone.

I had similar problems with my dog in the past.I just went back to basics.Good luck, and i hope you get it sorted.

It sounds like it might be worth having a go at crating her during the day so I get the opportunity to praise her when i let her out to wee. I'll try it for a few minutes to start with and see how she takes it. Do you think I need to crate both of them to make it fair? They both sleep soundly in their crates overnight so it shouldn't be too traumatic for them.

She's definately not in season as we had her spayed before her first season. I was worried she and Busta might end up with puppies by accident! He's been very dominant recently. It's like he's finally grown up and is busy asserting himself at every opportunity. I've been constantly trying to assert myself as pack leader but he challenges all the time and is scent marking constantly whilst we are out. He's also being less friendly with other dogs, much more agressive and protective of Chloe. I think it will be a blessed relief to get him castrated, hopefully he will calm down a lot. He's grown up into a lovely dog, he even won the best Sighthound class at the hook Norton Lure Coursing club show the other week and is great at the racing now. Too much testosterone I think though! :D

I have always popped mine in crates when left during the day. even if im just nipping to the shop.

Chloe is an absolute credit to you, you have done wonders for her

It seems she is fine whilst you are there BUT maybe a seperation thing so toileting when you are not, try crating her BUT only if you are away for a couple of hours, certainly not for hours on end, which i know you know already so will be sensible.

Busta........................typical male, sooner he has the snip the better, you will see a different dog, keep working on him & try again crating when you are out BUt once he has been done he will be 100% better :huggles:

What a wonderful job you have done with Chloe :D

I crate Flash when ever i go out and at night saves my wood work and flooring from being eaten and any accidents happening.

During the day if i go out i leave a small amount of food for flash and som toys and chewy sticks and his water just so he doesn't feel bored as he eats in his meals in his crate if i leave a little food its no different to him.

I crate him about 5 to 10 mins b4 i go out so i know he is settled he normally falls alsleep :) Then when i return i let him out in the garden and make a huge fuss when he does his buissness out there.

Seems to be working he'll even bark and howl now to be let out of the crate in the mornings to go in the garden.

Yes, they do, especially for housetraining. Have a look at: http://www.findoutaboutdogs.com/Crate_Training_Your_Dog.html and for a little book on it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Housebreak-You...21551052&sr=8-8
