My dog is 15 months now so clearly not teething anymore. He has started chewing on things like my rug, slippers, cushions, blankets - - anything soft that might be in the way. Most of these were hidden away when he was a young puppy except the rug - this is a new thing. Does chewing increase whilst they are adolescent? He was neutered nearly 3 weeks ago if that makes a difference. Is this just a phase?

My bull lurcher chewed things up until he was 9 yrs old mainly if he got stressed ...some dogs do chew more than others ...if I remember your boy has collie in him ...

Yes he is 25% collie - are they big chewers then?

My auntie has a border collie who is 3 yrs old now she gets 2 hrs exercise daily and someone is home 90%of the time but she still chews ...
I have given my pup my old slippers to chew which satisfies him and he doesn't try and touch my others ;)

He does have some things to chew like
old flip flops and bones but has history of eating things he shouldn’t so have to be carefull. He has found a thread on the rug and won’t forget it!

Mabel is six and occasionally chews her duvet and cushions. It isn’t a constant occurrence and hasn’t caused her any problem. I think it’s more of a habit when she remembers.

It maybe best to remove the rug for a while and try again at a later date ..

Freddie used to chew his bed during the day only but never at night. Moved it away during the day. He has started chewing that at night now so we have had to throw it away.

That’s what I am thinking - is currently has a very heavy box on one corner to drop him getting to it!

Chewing relieves stress because it releases endorphins, so the combination of adolescence and having had surgery is probably making him need extra comfort. As others have said, for some dogs chewing is a lifetime thing, but others grow out of it.
