My whippet prefers to travel in an enclosed travel cage (one of the fabric ones) as he feels nice and secure in there. We've previously tried a harness on the back seat which he managed to wriggle out of everytime (and ran into the drivers foot well (w00t) ) We also tried putting him in the boot area (hatchback) with a grill to prevent him getting over the back seat. He hated that too and it probably wasn't very safe anyway! I'd recommend a crate of one sort or another.
Here's a link to similar questions that have been asked in the past. I'm not sure whether your whippet travels from car sickness or just hates the car, but this may be of use:
I have just got a harness for Molly so she sits securely on the back seat, its great i wish i'd had one for my old dog. I also use it for walking her on the lead so she knows when the harness goes on something fun is going to happen
Ours travel in a custom built crate in the back of the car ... Tyg our five month pup was fine in there with the other dogs but hated travelling on his own so I bought a huge toy cat to share the crate with him when travelling without the rest of the pack and that seemed to do the trick and now when I'm out and about with just him he simply snuggles up to his cat and falls asleep.
Thanks. I will try the travel cage as we have also tried a harness and the boot. She likes standing on the front seat and looking out but it is too dangerous and I am hoping to find a better solution.
