Camera recommendations for dogs?

Hi There,

I'm about to start my part-time job which will require me to be gone for the afternoon (2-4PM) 3 days a week. I'm wondering if anyone has used any good cameras for pets or specifically for dogs? I imagine them to be the dog version of baby cameras. You can monitor, listen and talk to or even do something together remotely with your pets. Can anyone recommend some brands?
 
I am not very technical so cannot help with the camera.

Leaving your dog for a couple of hours should not cause the dog any problems as long as you handle it carefully.

Withdraw attention for about ten minutes before you go. When you go out - just go, do not have emotional goodbyes. Your dog will miss you less if you are cool with him or her.

Same thing when you return. Just be cool for five minutes so that your absence is not seen as a big deal.

Make sure your dog is tired, toileted and toyed.

I wonder if your dog might be spooked by a remote you?
 
We have a Motorola which you can access via Hubble app - it is adequate for the times we need it, camera can be panned and tilted, you can talk to the dog via it (but we found that apart from entertaining by scaring each other talking through it when one or another was at home, it can spook the dog) and it has a thermostat so you can check room temperature is good. You can set it up so it alerts on movement etc. but we have never had the need. Kevin is a whippet and loves to sleep so when we do leave him in his pen he just curls up in his bed and enjoys some shuteye!

Hi,

Thanks for the tips! My boy is pretty calm but I'm not sure how they would react to a remote me. :) Definitely something to take into consideration.

Think the treat dispenser might cause a riot in some households!
 
Haha good point! We only have one pup but I can see how that might be a problem if there were more than one!!

The other thing I was looking at was the Canary all-in-one home security that's compatible with Apple HomeKit, mainly because I'm an apple nerd.

We have used an app that allows one phone to be a camera and the other to be a receiver. The app is called 'manything'.
 
Did you decide on a camera? I'm thinking of getting a wireless one to record whilst we are out, I want to record as well, I think that this can be done on SD card, there is also some free software to record on Windows but not sure what cameras it supports.

It's only two hours so really can't see the point, unless your dog has been pampered there shouldn't be a problem.
 
I bought a cam to specifically keep an eye on our dog during nights when we first got him (he slept in another part of the house which was protected by a child's stair gate). Search for the Vstar cam on Amazon, it does pretty much everything above and is fairly priced although they have gone up over recent months. Doesn't monitor temperature though and I would recommend reading the positive reviews about setup as the manual is a bit weak, but overall I'd highly recommend it.

That's exactly the camera I have, except in black, and I'm using it right now ;) No, it doesn't track movement, but some of the things it can do are:

  • Pan and tilt.
  • Record to SD card or PC hard disk.
  • Be controlled via an app (I'm using an iPhone) or program on your PC.
  • Night vision is automatic and very good. Can also be switched off an on.
  • You can set up and store points the camera will automatically point to so you don't have to keep scrolling if viewing on a phone or using the mouse a lot on PC.
  • You can get the camera to blink or not to show it's working.
  • Can receive audio.
  • You can talk through it (but tinny, but understandable by people by the camera).
  • Can mount it upside down on a ceiling like we have, then invert the image so it looks right way up when you view it/move the camera.
  • It only has a digital zoom.
  • It's an indoor camera.

I highly rate this bit of kit, although I got it cheaper than it's currently advertised. It's still a good camera for the money IMHO, but read the helpful reviews as the instructions are poorly translated and don't make a lot of sense but everything's easy enough to do.

Thanks for that! You can save a couple of quid by getting one that has a damaged box, the camera and instructions are fine, just the box that's damaged
