Breeding Help Needed..

I have two good border collies and now the bitch is over 2 years old, we would like to breed our first litter. I bought an excellent book called the 'book of the bitch' to give me some insight. I know the vet is always on hand if any problems but this is one I hope someone else will be able to answer...

she came into season 12 days ago and they were allowed to mate on day 9 and 11 (planned to do day 10 and 12 but dog got out!) they tied both times so we though ok. today though I have noticed small drops of fresh blood.

Would this mean she is definatley not pregnant? also, should they be allowed to mate again or is twice 48 hours apart the best way?

Some bitches continue to show colour long into their season, it is not a sign she may or may not be in whelp. As she has been mated twice and tied both times, that really should be enough. Good luck and I hope you can find homes for her puppies. Will you be keeping one?

Thank you for quick reply Bertha. They did tie both times for about 15 minutes. I hope to keep one but will wait and see. Both are excellent working dogs and we have had enquiries in the past in case we decided to let them have pups, so we are hopeful of finding them all good working homes.

Sounds like you already have two good matings, but if the dog is at hand I would let them mate every 48 hours while she is standing for him - can't do any harm, and at least it makes sure you cover the time she has ovulated. The Book of the Bitch is a fab book, and one I have read from cover to cover on many occasions - especially when I bred my first litter in 1987. I had all the sterilized equipment ready to cut and tie umbilical cords etc, but never needed them, and now I would tear with fingernails rather than cut, as it is more like the mother tearing with her teeth. I too would be mate them until she decides she has enough.

I have had several bitches who showed colour some 3-4weeks after mating, and had normal litters of 6-7 pups. As long as the discharge is not smelly I would not worry.
