Border collie help!!!

Hi!! I have a 3 year old border colli who just recently began taking seizures. The vet has told us he has epilepsy! In the past 3 months he has taken a total of 7 seizures he has been on medication for 3 weeks and took 2 small seizures today! I was just wondering if anyone else has had a dog with epilepsy and how they managed to control it!

We have a corgi x with mild petite mal. Maybe a seizure once every couple of months. When they get more frequent we will have to put him on meds. Your collie obviously will need to be on medication for the foreseeable future- but dogs like people can still live happy fulfilling lives with this illness. Don't despair. I'm afraid the only thing we've found that just might provoke an attack is letting him get over-tired. Even then not entirely sure... good luck with your lovely BC!

Thanks for your reply! He has been disagnosed with epilepsy and his seizures are cluster seizures so he can have 2-3 a day but it’s even 2-3 weeks he has one! He was seen by vet today and medication has been changed so hopefully this controls it for him. I just feel so helpless and hate seeing him go through this

Hello @Shelby - I don’t have any experience first hand with epilepsy but recently at a dog first aid course they talked through what you should do when a fit occurs. It may be of some help? (unless you’ve been told already)

The lady told us that when a fit occurs you must turn off any lights (if occurring at home), move any objects out of the way and be completely silent. She said the noise levels were important and showed us a video of a dog going into seizure and the owner talking to her dog, this actually caused the dog to seizure even more. Everything is heightened when in seizure so any noise can cause more problems. Even if you are trying to reassure your dog.
