there not ready to be mated till around day 10-18 ("Normal" is 11-14)

So i'm sure you'll spot blood and notice a massive increase in the size of their backends before their ready to be mated.

Paula checks all our bitch's every morning when she lets them out (only takes 2 seconds)

Ok ok :clown: but Spry hardly bled at all and didn't swell until well into her season so if I had not been vigillant it might have gone unoticed and if they aren't ready until then why does paula check them every morning because they wouldn't be ready on day one anyway :- "

1stly so that no accidents happen, 2ndly if you are intending to breed then you need to know the exact day they came in so you can plan when they need to visit the stud dog.

All our dogs get a check over everyday to make sure their ok in themselves ect.

A few of our bitches are the same Lesley hardly bleed at all thats why i check them every morning to make sure, others like Meg who is in season at the moment is like a massacre, blood everywhere, even a blind man couldnt miss her being in season. (w00t)

A general question here - when the swelling goes down, does that mean that the fertile time is past? Even if they're still losing a little pinky/red fluid?

In theory! once the swelling goes down the dog (in theory) wouldnt be able to penatrate the bitch so (in theory) you should be safe.

The fertile period is differant in every bitch some are ready to be mated (fertile) from very early on others need mating late into their cycle, theres a thread on hear someware that a bitch was mated about day 40 (i think) which is very unusual but shows nothing is straight forward when it comes to bitch's and seasons.

Normaly by 28 days from you first seeing spotting you should be ok/safe (in theory LOL)

Well, in our extremely limited experience of just 2 goes, the first time (when the bitch had a classic 'snapdragon bud' swelling, according to the book) was extremely easy. We tried a couple of days later, when it had gone down just a little, but he couldn't get it in at all. The bitch, whilst enthusiastic, was slightly less amenable, not helping as much as the previous session. I got the impression the timing was was quite critical.

amber had her 1st at 6mths :blink: bit young, she was the 1st out of her sisters, who all started at 9mths, like their mother did. saying that, she is the only one who also comes in regularly, the others seasons are all over the place, and one ended up spayed through pyo

her 1st was in november 03, 2nd may 04, 3rd november, then she decided to surprise us with her 4th in april 05. her 5th was in october, which again surprised us as we'd been told that after a litter a bitch comes in later, but thats dogs for you . god only knows what caused this one month shift :blink:

weve had some pain keeping them apart, our saviour is cleos small size 'archie struggles to get down low' and a pair of nickers on overnight. :thumbsup:

do you think smaller bitches start their 1st season earlier or later, I guessed ( and hoped :- " ) it would be later, shall have to pm her mum's owner !
