Barney In The Flesh

A reminder that in that last diagram, above, the dog's shoulders and hips are on the corners of the larger rectangle which was the dog's standing position.

So even though by the foot prints in this diagram it looks as though the dog is 'moving parallel' it is not, the leg is moving in a straight line, but at an angle, to allow the feet to fall closer to the centre line.

 Very well described Lana. I had picked up Cartman's first 'wide' comment but thought that as do not qualify as a whippet specialist I would leave it for someone who is.

I totally agree with your desription and yes Cartman I am a gundog person and hence movement is a very important component in what I look for in a dog.

Just thought I would add this to the discussion it is the whole of the leg that angles in towards that center line and the faster the dog is moved the more angle there is.

Here is Rachel Page Elliott(The new Dogsteps, p.89) explaining it very well:

"When a dog breaks into a trot, his body is supported by only two legs at a time, which move as alternating diagonal pairs. He must therefore balance himself, as nearly as possible, over a centre column of support, in order to travel easily and

efficiently; otherwise, he will sway from side to side. To achieve balance,

his legs angle inward toward a centre line beneath his body, and the greater

the speed, the closer they come to tracking on a straight line,(...)

Variations in the dog's height, breadth of body, and length of leg,

influence the extent to which the legs incline inward, but all dogs make the

effort - regardless of breed or type."

Just a little more food for thought.
