FYI K9'ers. I have just tucked Barney in for the night after an encounter with a parti-coloured brunette with gorgeous brown eyes. Namely Ch Skyeway Rodeo Drive both parties very content with their sware under the moonlite skies of Melbourne. :huggles:

Cheers - Sued

Barney look a likes. That would be nice. However this time the mum is a real stunner in her own right too. o:)

Have to say, I only saw Barney in the flesh on Saturday. His movement is unreal. I think he could just move at any speed ALL DAY. He does it so well that very little energy is spent. A far cry from some that have short upper arm & either stamp or lift their front feet. Rear end is clean & wide. I saw one that day, & I would go as far as to say it was so close behind that it would start a fire in dry grass.

 I hope he's not WIDE behind, at the trot, Cartman - are you sure you've chosen the right word here? The "pooey nappy syndrome" as I call it is just as incorrect as moving close. And there is a difference between moving close (hocks) and the feet falling towards the line of centre of gravity, which is what should happen. It is beyond me why people WANT whippets to move away like they've pooed their pants. Perhaps I should start a new thread to discuss hind movement?

Yes, please Lana, I would like to know what others have to say. I always wondered why would people want their dogs to move " wide". It looks so unnatural. :D The "pooey nappy syndrome" describes it perfectly:D

Nope not too wide. But PLENTY enough so there is never going to be a touch, or cross over.

Judges that like P.N.S. ( pooey nappy syndrome) are those that are more of the S.J.S. (shirty judge syndrome). They would not know movement if it walked up to them.

Best movement judges are those from GSD's, Gundog group & Hounds. I hate the results from someone that does not know. EG. a Toy person out of their depth with large dogs where you can see bad movement from a distance, yet dont care.

I hate PNS, I always think that sort of dog has something wrong with its hips.

NEVER seen Barney do that so guess Cartman just used the wrong word, shame on you mate

Maybe I used the the right word, but it has been taken in the wrong context. He does not move with PNS at the trot or at a slow walk. I have seen so many that are wrong behind that when you see this dog you think of the word wide.

I was very excited about his movement that looking back the words that could of been used :::: TRUE or CORRECT

We see so much crap here that when the right dog comes along I am just lost for words.

Where would you put a dog's centre of gravity is Lana?

I'm going to put my penny's worth here you K9er's. My understanding is that the rear foot lands where the front has just been. Therefore a whippet should move parallel, and there is not too many that do....

Imagine the dog is standing, draw a rectangle from paw to paw. Now on that rectangle draw diagonal lines from corner to corner. Where these lines intersect (point c), draw a line straight through (lengthways). IF the weight on the dog was equally distributed, point c would be the centre of gravity. Weight on a dog is not evenly distributed - there is usually more weight on the forehand - therefore the centre of gravity will fall forward of this point c. (How far forward will depend on a number of factors within the breed of dog.) The lengthways line which runs through point c is the line of the centre of gravity (or centre line of support in travel). When the dog moves the centre of gravity will swing along the arc XY.

Therefore a whippet should move parallel,

No.  When the dog is standing the front legs are parallel to each other and the back legs are parallel to each other.  If the dog tried to move with the legs moving in this parallel fashion and the feet falling in those original standing positions (ie distance from the centre line) the dog would roll from side to side. (Lateral displacement) see diagram above ... the centre of gravity would be swinging on a wide arc.

and there is not too many that do....

and  that's why!

To create stability in movement and lessen the lateral displacement, the animal has to narrow the base of support so that the arc upon which the centre of gravity swings is narrower.  Hence the feet have to fall closer to the line of the centre of gravity.  (Diagram below)

It works the same in humans.  Draw a long straight line in the sand.  Stand over it comfortably.  See where your feet fall ... either side of the line ... a wide base of support.  Walk along the line for a way, then run.  You will see that as your speed increases your feet will fall closer to the line.  If you tried to run and have your feet fall in the original (standing) distance from the line your body would be rocking from side to side.
