Antibiotic only licensed for humans

My 11 year old otherwise healthy dog recently had surgery on a paw to remove a recurring lump. Now nearly 2 weeks later the wound is infected. The vet has sampled it and found that it is antibiotic resistant. The only antibiotic that could tackle it is not licensed for animals. It could cause kidney damage, so if administered my dog will have to go on a drip. Has anybody had any similar experience? I’m feeling very apprehensive…

We have had medications that have been for human use used on our dogs, but never to my knowledge antibiotics.

The most recent one suggested was "Canestan" for "Thrush", it works perfectly for Ringworm.

My dog is on gabapentin, which is also not licensed for dogs, but - as far as I can tell - is safe, and my vet has had a lot of success with it. I dare say that if there is a risk with the antibiotic your vet is suggesting, it will be a far smaller risk than not treating the infection, or treating it with an antibiotic that won't fully cure it. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Thank you all for your comments. I will no doubt press ahead with the unlicensed AB if the vet thinks it’s the only way forward, the kidney issue is throwing me. Anything now to get the wound healed!
