After dipping my toes half in feeding natural, half in complete (as i was concerned about getting enought vits, mins, etc) im crossing to the other side and ditching the complete this week ( just ordering a freezer full from Landywoods  )

Typically as present my lot would have a small brekkie of complete and then maybe something like tripe/beef/chicken/sardines,etc for tea. The whips also have chicken wings several times a week.

Well, anyway, they will/are having a more natural meat diet rather than the raw bones (BARF) diet and at present im fine with this but as im cutting out complete im concerned as to them getting calcuim - i will be adding more dairy stuff ( yogurt, cheese, etc) but i dont know if this would be suffiecent (sp) Anyway, my question is does anybody add bonemeal?

They will be having their chick wings as normal, and maybe occasional rib bones but the reason i darent give them this daily is that we have a EBT too and i just darent give him whole bones as he is such a pig im worried he'd choke. Im ordering some meat with bone bits in - im just hoping that will be ok if he swalloed whole

If you give bigger pieces, they can't swallow it at once; Give chicken legs for example.

Also, I wouldn't add anything else. My 4 whippets are on a raw diet for 8 years. Even 2 puppies were raised on raw. I've never supplemented with bonemeal. It is actually very dangerous to oversupplement !! If they eat (chicken) bones every day, they will not lack calcium !

Hi Lisa, there's really no need to supplement with bonemeal as they'll be getting the calcium they need from the chicken wings

Imo,the most important thing to give them is seawead powder as it's rich in minerals.

I might give that a go Alfyn - anywhere in particular you get this from, or is it just a generic thing?

I love the way this forum kinda shapes the way we bring up our dogs. When I first got Dij I went for complete food - because it says it's 'complete' so I assumed it was, and truth be told because it's easy!

But then I start reading about BARF - particularly the chikkie wings (which left to my own devices I would never have dared to feed - we must all have the 'never feed chicken bones to dogs' mantra running round our heads somewhere!

So I tried it and the difference to my dogs mouths was quite remarkable.

I still have vet nurses telling me off for feeding wings, but knowing that others do this and there are reasons for it, gives me the confidence to stand my ground.

My vets wanted me to add mouthwash stuff to the boys' drinking water instead - with the caveat that I must also give them a bowl of clean water alongside as some dogs don't like the taste of the mouthwash.

Now call me daft if you like but; if my dog doesn't like the taste of mouthwash and I provide an alternative bowl of drinking water - how much mouthwash exactly do they expect him to consume???? :teehee:

NaaaaaH - chikkie wings all the way!

I would try Dorwest for your supplements

I was worried about vitamin supp as Bluebell was a baby still when we went raw - so I bought her some sa37 - and she won't touch the stuff! If I put it on chunks she shakes each individual chunk clean...all over the floor! and if I put it in with mince she won't go near it!

Sometimes I despair at my colleagues.... (former colleagues) but common sense isn't altogether essential for passing a veterinary degree. Sigh. :- "

I'm a vet and I feed Tom Lonsdale's raw meaty bone (RMB) diet. If you're concerned, join the yahoo 'BritBarf' list - it's got a wealth of good experience. I wouldn't personally feed bone meal, just because it's hard to establish how much they need. If you feed the bones at the ratios they give (which isn't huge) then they should be fine.

the more of us that do it, the more the veterinary and nursing professions will have to wake up.

I agree with all thats been said here and have fed raw for a long time, i only add

Seaweed as debs does, and Easy green or Keepers from Dorwest and Salmon oil Sprouted Flax a couple of time a week

Your right Manda my vets have now stopped looking at me as if im Mad as more now feed this way!!!

Glad you are going "all the way" Lise :huggles: Jan

Hi all, thanks for the replies  i should of made it clearer though thats its actually more the EBT that im concerned about the calicum part, as i said the whips have chick wings but i cant give bones to Diesel (EBT) cause he just doesnt chew  I did try him on them but he had one chew and then swallowed it whole  even rib bones he will frantically knaw and than try and gulp them, You can see the whips really enjoy them and happily take their time whereas he is just on a mission to fill his belly as quick as possible!

Rachel - i remember Jo saying that her Chloe is now fed completley natural - just wondering how she is with eating bones with her being a bigger breed? is she greedy with them or does she eat them sensibley like the whippets?

I think she is fairly sensible with them - but I know Bull Terrier's are like :- " , so not sure how your boy would be. I think it would be worth giving him a try with them and see how he goes.

Lisa,

Chicken wings go down the hatch pretty quick with Chloe. A good alternative is to give turkey wings / legs a try (they are pretty huge). They have to chew them properly because they are big and they keep them quiet for a while too. The bigger bones are only suitable for Chloe, not for the Whips - worth a go with Diesel?

Thanks Jo, i will try him ( with baited breath) last time he had a marrow bone he almost ate the whole bone and it must of compacted as he was quite constipated with it and had the most awful chalky poo! :x :(
