scott,

the non peds were running 1/2 yrd a lb and the peds ran on time.

This handicap seemed fairer to the peds to run on time..........it made for some good close finishes. at gin pit club we run on time and i think its an exellent handicapp system. if the ped race was ran on weight alone rolling thunder would probably have won hands down but at least with the time handicap all the dogs stood a chance of winning.

No worries, just curious! :D

Just thought I'd get my 2p in there as somebody had raised the issue of the handicapping! :b

But one question, why were the non peds running off weights and the peds running off times ?
IMHO if the peds had run off weights Rolling Thunder wouldn't have been touched!
Exactly - you've just proved our point!!! We asked some of our ped owners what format they wanted to race & they chose time, mainly because not all our ped dogs were open class so we try to run as fair a handicap as we can so that all dogs should be in with a chance - not one person who ran a ped complained & everyone on paper stood a chance (they all went over the line together!!), think about it, Buffy 36lb (sorry Jacqui) could you honestly see her giving 9yd start to Rolling Thunder? and more to the point would you think it a fair handicap? Not having a go i just can't understand why ped racers can't get their head around time racing.

As Buffy's owner and a newbie, I'm all for it. My dog gets great enjoyment out of racing and it gives me hope that if I work hard enough, my dog may be a winner too one day. I suspect that this may be irritating to others who are real pros at the game but I don't think their winning chance is comprimised, it just gives us a close up of the winners bum! (w00t)

Here's hoping that one day another dog will see Buffys bum! ;) cos the one good thing about being at the bottom is there is only one way to go! :D

Without being contencious (spelling is probabaly wrong) you didn't ask me! :b

But that's by the by.

I'm not trying to cause a fuss, but usually at the gin pit, the peds and non peds both run off time handicaps. Just seems strange (to me  ) that you change one for the open and not the other! :b

So on your reckoning, for the non peds, the best dog wins! But for the peds we have a good close finish, but maybe the slowest dog wins ? :- "

Is there something wrong with that? Numpty that I am I always thought that's what handicap racing was all about! As Vicky explained the time handicap came in because we wanted to include our small contingent of "regular"(i.e those who don't come down just to iron out their dogs problems) club ped racers in the open. As most of us are "fun" racers (isn't that what WCRA racing is supposed to be about?) we decided the time system gave everybody a fairer chance. If we had run weight groups everybody would have got a trophy as we had a fair weight spread & only 12 entries.

Last time I saw Keith with Dino he wasn't crying. He took the cons trophy anyway. Incidentally the dog that did win it, won its heats off the back mark. Being the good sport I am I advised her to give him a go at your place so you may see him. That's if he gets through the trials, height & weight restrictions etc.........still suppose that's all part of the fun too!!

Organisation for this open started way back before you became a member as things like advertising and sponsorship needed to be sorted well in advance.

I'm not trying to cause a fuss, but usually at the gin pit, the peds and non peds both run off time handicaps. Just seems strange (to me  ) that you change one for the open and not the other!
Time handicap's in the non ped world aren't very well attended, probably because the biggest majority of racers have "open class" dogs and not your average gin pit club racer. On our reckoning all dogs we're given a fair chance with both handicaps - we could have run the non peds at 1yd/lb with a 16lber winning supreme - if that happened in ped racing would that mean the best dog won?

By best dog i'm presuming you mean best dog over whatever particular handicap & not fastest dog?

well done to all who went, raced, and organised it. and a big well done to my mate keith&dino on winning the cons in the ped section

In my opinion I think timing is fair, like it has been said a lot of the ped dogs run at club level and not open class, it was Barney who got into the main final, yes he did have a start but if he but he also shifted and kept in the lead. There were no hard feelings about and everyone was chatting and laughing afterwards, if we ran at our ped club Barney is trapped at the back (most of the time), competing with a lot of (good) open class dogs and he never gets a look in!. This is disheartening for us and also it must be dishearteing for the dog! Since running him at Gin Pit on Wednesday nights he has really come on, his time has gone faster and he has now started to go for the lure at the end (like he used to before another dog had a go at him). Considering both us and Keith run at the ped club, you should be saying 'well done' to both of us and not trying 'to cause a fuss'. At the end of the day I enjoy racing at both clubs and enjoy the company at both, again there was no hard feeling and I'm really proud of our dog - who by the way runs better when encouragement is shouted (ragging) but thats on another thread! :D

hi all

im just about getting dried off ( got a nice pic of the moat around our tent)the only thing that was bad about the weekend was the weather started off nicely with lacey getting 2nd in child handler on saterday then on sunday the open racing this was my first open with lacey LASTIC :) and to say that we were nervous is a understatement ,in her 1st race ( wendy would not watch she stayed in the tent) she ran her heart out and came second and she was not far behind the winner if i could do cartwheels i would have done one on the winning line, as i was expecting lacey to come last.

her second race she came second (wendy in the tent biting nails again) me thinking about doing cartwheels again so it was second all round i would like to say a big thankyou to the organisers both days went like clockwork what a way the spend my birthday .

:D Tony :D

Just my thoughts!

Scott.    :- "
Gin Pit is an "open" club in that no restrictions, passports or membership of other organisations is required to race at the club.

There was no restriction on peds entering the 1/2yd/lb handicap.

The open is a top ten WN event for the non peds and the format has to be one that will attract other open class dogs - which means weight handicap racing.

The peds who run at are club should not be excluded from running at the club open on the day. Since the "open" nature of the club allows any ped to run it won't count for the ped top ten and for the same reason means its unlikely that ped racers will travel, wether its 1yd/lb , 1/2yd/lb or time handicap. There are some ped racers who won't attend such an event simply because there are peds running without WRCA passports even though the event is on their doorstep

Time handicaping allows a "slower" dog to win as long as it tries hard - it tests the dogs desire to win not simply its speed.

Rolling Thunder was the only "open class" ped present AFAIK and so should have easily won a ped weight handicap. On the day that would have defeated the point of the ped race.

well done carol&barney you go to opens to win and win barney did, well done again

From Fleesh's post I thought a dog called Leo won ? :b

Congratulations Carol, Barry, Keith on the wins!

My post's were not meant to knock anybody or be critical of use of the time handicap. :p

Carol, Barney never runs off the back when using the weight handicap. He's currently running off -7 (Forest is off +11). If you like I can go through this with you the next time you're at the club! :sweating:

Or we could just concentrate on getting the dogs in the right jackets/boxes! :teehee:

Leo won the Final & Barney was a finalist, in fact sunday was the best i've seen Barney run EVER! None of this lifting his head 10yd before the line business.

I agree Vicky - Go Barney Go! LOL

Watch out Scott never mind -7 here comes a +1000000000000000000000000000! :clown:

Oh forgot - coat and trap situation well sorted - you tell Barry he shouts at me LOL
