A Fed Up Whippet!

Lucky you went in, hope I get an easier time.

Best of luck, hope all goes well and all the puppies are ok.

Will you have to do anything special following a c-section with your girl or will she be able to manage them on her own?

We've had 6 pups. 4 girls and 2 boys.

3 fawn parti girls and 1 fawn girl and 1 brindle parti boy and 1 brindle boy.

Not how I intended it but I suppose this happens all the time.

All making lots of noise as they all need their mum and food. Mum is a little wary and not happy, I think she needs a good sleep!

This is all strange and any advice would be appreciated!

She's still a little wobbly and unsettled. She hasn't taken to them properly yet and has no milk yet. I'll just give her plenty of TLC and encouragement.
 
You must try and get them to suckle, it will help the bitch and bring the milk down. They need that first drink of milk. Good luck with them.
 
Have the pups had any colostrum yet? They need it ASAP.

Maybe if you PM peppermint lady on here, she will be able to advise you.

Her bitch had to have a c-section (5 puppies) so she has recently been through the same scenario.

Well I thought I would have to put them on her but the vet just told me to use Whelpi the first 2 days.

They are fast asleep at the moment and mum is nodding off...bless.
 
You have some hard work ahead of you if you are having to feed Whelpi - feeds every 2 hours round the clock!!

It seems to take 24 hours for whippets to recover from GAs so it's certainly not a walk in the park for Diamond right now :( Keep a very close eye on her and don't let her get cold or in a draught. Also check her gum colour regularly, ensure that she has a nice pink colour to them and not pale or white.

They sound lovely :wub: I do hope the hormones kick in very soon and she will be able to feed them herself.

as Jane said my girl had a c-sec and had 6 puppies, when i got home with them it was very worrying as a bitch can turn on them....i just sat in the "den" with her and the babies watching every move...the 1st milk is so important and the less hands on you are the more she should bond, i would just reassure her that its ok and maybe hold the puppies to her nose so she will sniff at them and then she will (hopefully) do some bottom washing, then you know you have cracked it :thumbsup:

usually the labour helps with the milk coming in and the puppies suckling brings it in more, as she has had a C-sec she has missed that bit so the more the babies suckle the faster she will start producing, Grace (i thought) never looked like she had much milk, but the puppies soon drain it off she must of had enough as all the 6 babies thrived.

Sorry to hear Diamond has had to have a c section

My Mollee had a section and they put the pups on her as soon as she was half way coming around ,I took them all home that day and Mollee had no problems feeding 7 . I do know some bitches can reject , but I find it strange they didnt tell you to put babies and mum together so they can encourage her milk asap

Fingers crossed all goes well from now
 
She is being a little rough. She is cleaning them no bother but doesn't like them going too near her tummy.

She wants to be with them though and won't leave the room.

They sent her home as soon as they could and pups have been with her but the vet said to start feeding them Whelpi. Do you think I should let them try to take to her?

I wouldnt worry about her being a little rough , dont forget she didnt get to clean them and bond as she would have done normallly . Try to put them on teats not near her incision . Its said that the ones at the front have the best milk , even though the ones at the back always look the best :blink:
