A Bit Of Nostalgia

This lurcher show & racing was to raise money for leukaemia patients at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, thanks to all those people who came to support this worthy cause we raised £1,ooo :thumbsup: over 80 raffle prizes were donated :thumbsup: The lurcher judge this day was my old sparring partner Chris Cowdell from a well knowen boxing family from Birmingham his brother is Pat Cowdell who was a very good pro. He provided his services free plus £50 donation :thumbsup:

On the left picture is Mrs Morley taking supreme show champion and me with our Sally taking reserve. This show ground was at Maltby South Yorkshire, not far from where Maltby whippet club is now.

The picture on the right was taken at Crickhowell Powys South Wales. This was the venue for the UK show championships in 1986, on the left is David Gaydon with his bitch Queen who took reserve show champion of champions. Me on the right with our Sally, taking Supreme show champion of champions :D This show & racing went on to become Chatsworth run by the NLRC.

This photo was taken at the Midland Game Fair in the 80s.

Now to win the lurcher racing here you at to have a fit fast dog.This particular year there were 9 heats of under 23"dogs racing, I was told the favourite to win this race was a well known Whippet x Bedlington breeder George Kelly, from Brownhills in the West Midlands near Cannock Chase. His under 23" dog was named Ben, a first x Whippet Greyhound out of Country Music. This dog was built like a brick shit house, pardon the pun. In each heat first & second going through, Sally won her heat, Ben won his heat we never met until the final can you guess who won? :D ;)

This was the rabbiting class, even the odd 1 or 2 Whippets in it :thumbsup:

The young lady first on the right her husband was a vet, and they came out hare coursing one day with me & Hazel, I think it was with the East of England Lurcher Club, happy days :thumbsup:

Speaking of Whippet x Greyhounds, here is Mr Vern Hutchings with Country Music and the pup kissing his dad was my well known racing dog Bow, the other pup was Brin also belonged to me, Joyce & Vern gave both of them to me.

I would like to thank Mr & Mrs Hutchings once again, sadly Joyce passed away last year, two of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet.

Chatsworth 1990, Bow had just taken reserve champion of champions in the lurcher show, the judge was John O'Keefe. The supreme show winner was a bitch called Shanna, owned by Debra Williams from down south. Bow would not stand still in the show ring when it got down to the last 2 dogs for the judges to decide who the final winner was going to be! The reason why was because he could see the organisers setting the straight racing up (w00t) Anyway he had won the racing on the Saturday, and this lad was raring to go, boy and didn't he go! If my memory serves me well I think it was the first time Mike Palmer came to race his bitch Holly in the un 23" racing and we've been friends ever since.

What a weekend, won the racing both days and got reserve champion of champions in the show ring :D

Love the pik of Country music! :wub: Geoff can I ask what Bow's racing name was? Only because I like looking through Tony's collection of whippet news and playing catch up on who's who. Oh some adult piks would be fab too :thumbsup:

You're a star for finding this photo! Me & Hazel have been looking everywhere to find this picture. It was put in the Countrymans Weekly by Tony Cooper when he did a write up about this dog back in the 80s. As soon as I saw him I knew this was the dog to put our Sally to, and history proved this.

Letters to the Editor, Countrymans Weekly February 3 1995.

The letter Too small for coursing hares, what would your advice be? I gave advice but the editor did not print it. "why don't you take your head for a shit"7 months old and wanting to course it on hares :wacko:

This was an advert placed in the 'Shooting News',on June the 25th/1st July1993.I was unaware that I'd been invited to attend this forum until I read this issue,which I wasn't pleased about.I phoned Brian Plummer and asked for an explanation! His reply was 'I thought you would think it would be a privilage to stand with me on a forum.'I won't tell you what I replied but the first word started with F and the second word started with O :rant: Needless to say,I didn't attend.

By the way ,for those of you too young to remember(Jac) the Shooting News became The Countrymans Weekly.

Several weeks later Mr Plummer sent me a letter of apology.I've been looking for it,but Hazel says she vividly remembers me wiping my arse on it :D In fact on a clear day,you can still see the print on my buttocks :D

These two judges came Milton Keynes, Buchinghamshire. On the left is Tim Freshwater, and Eric Fox 2 very good judges, Eric loved taking the ****, but all in good fun :D The lady on the right some of you might recognise, its old Sandra Spoffs mate, can't think of her sir name for the life of me.

We were well knon for putting good shows & racing on, like I said in a previous posts. Its hard work putting these events on as some of you may know, but when a thank you card comes through the post like this did it makes it all worth while :thumbsup:

Paul & Mary Thompson went on to be on the committee of the NLRC :thumbsup:

The man with the hat on holding the dogs, is Tony Cartawick, my best mate.

We used to go out lamping together, he bred some good working lurchers and they could win a rosette or 2. He could turn his hand to anything, nets, slip leads, sticks, and so on. Tony died about 4 years ago with motorneurons disease :(

Me & Hazel went to see him at his house a few months before he died, he had wrote a poem about a lurcher he once owned & asked Hazel to read it out to us. Well halfway through it we were both full to the top with tears.

I will ask Peggy his wife if she will allow me to put it on here.
