We have a neutered male dog and are thinking of getting another dog. I've heard that it would be best to get a bitch, but when we fostered one, he didn't like her at all. Advice would be most welcome.
I think it is a myth that dogs like to have another dog to live with. I never have two dogs now as each time I introduced a new dog to my existing dog they were most put out! You are enough company for your dog and he may not want to share you...
If you do go ahead then yes opposite sex is the best way to go. Most rescues will let you have introductions and walks to ensure they are compatible. If it was a disaster they will also take the dog back.
