20 weeks and still piddling in the house!

Ok so at what point does the puppy get the house training thing?!! Bonnie is 20 weeks now. I have taken her out pretty much religiously when it’s wee wee time and she does wee on command but then she’ll piddle in the house....even when the back door is open. It’s almost like she has sat out in the sun then comes in for a wee!!! Is it just laziness? She gets some really tasty treats and fuss when she wee’s outside, especially those on command and runs to the fridge so she knows the difference. She has barked to go outside but this is generally for no 2’s. She can hold her wee for ages as she is created during the night.

This could be the issue. She needs to be rewarded immediately, so she gets it that the reward is for toileting, and not for toileting and running to the fridge. I would now try a different reward that she hasn't had before (teeny pieces of frankfurter sausage or roast chicken or cheese) and go back to basics - outdoor toilets make it rain supertreats. She sounds smart, she will get there.

If she has a habit of weeing when she comes into the house, even if she's just weed outside - then when she comes in, take her straight back outside again before she has a chance to wee indoors. This is quite common and is referred to as the 'double wee'.

I think it's also recommended that you don't leave the back door open for her to wander in and out - I'm not sure of the exact reasoning here, maybe someone else can supply it. But it could be so that she learns to ask to go out rather than just assume she can wander out there, and then one day get caught short because the door's shut.

Oh gosh yes I never thought of that. There is a delay in wee then treat. It's so hard to sneak treats out of the fridge when I know she is about to go as she stops. I will pre-empt better and def change the treats thank you.

Thank you. She was starting to bark to go out for toilet but then came the good weather so I tend to leave the door open. I guess until she has cracked it I will try closing it.

No I haven't but she is seeing a vet Thursday so will mention it thanks.
