10 puppies and Us

Delia has worked hard to train Shiva. The program was done roughly in November last year. You are just watching a program you don't know what is happening in normal life.  Both new owner and puppy will learn together.

Some new owners and some new puppies will learn together but not all! That is why the rescue centres are full of adolescent dogs with behaviour problems. Delia may well feel obliged, under the glare of the cameras, to put in all the hard work necessary to re train Shiva. Many of the general public will not be so prepared. I have known of several top behaviourists who refuse, when offered the opportunity, to make tv programmes like this unless they get editorial rights. They foresee exactly what is happening here, which is that all the hard work, to re train these puppies, ends up on the cutting room floor.

I can assure you all the lady with the leonburger has not rehoned the pup. She is doing really well now and is well behaved and now 9 months old. 

Can we assume from this comment that you have something to do with this show and that the puppies are being carefully followed up? It would be reassuring to think so. Hopefully as the show progresses we will see how Delia is coping in a more sensible manner in "normal life".  It's good to hear that the puppy is ok.

I contacted delia via her website and asked her how her and Shiva were getting on.

Did you ask her if this was the first puppy she had owned.  If it is then this might explain why she was so ill prepared when she collected it from the breeder and brought it home for the first time.  This doesn't explain however why the breeder let her take it under these conditions.  When we bought our puppy, the breeder spent a long time vetting us and asking lots of pertinent questions,. We then had to sign to confirm that we would treat her well and would return her to the breeder should any problems arise.

No I didn't ask her. It's not my place to ask her. The puppy is well looked after and loved that's all that matters. Just because your breeder did that doesn't mean to say all breeders should do it. None of the people I got my pups off did it. 

The pup has got a loving home and will not end up in a shelter etc., 

i have known people to be vetted etc., and the dogs still end up in rescues so getting doesn't mean anything. At one time or another there are loads of people that have got a pup home without any experience we have all started off like this me included I was brought up in a flat we wasn't allowed animals in there so are you saying that I was inexperienced to/ill prepared? I have 5 dogs, 2 cats and a parrot. At one time I had 6 dogs and 3 cats. 

Evennthe most experienced person can be unprepared. 

I noticed you have yet to air views on the lady with the chi's. 

Certain people on here think they know it all and are the be all and end all of dogs. They are not. Also they try and push feeding raw on to people. 

People come on here for advice etc., not to be told they are idiots and doing everything wrong

Goodness bub1, I seem to have upset you somewhat, this was not my intention and I apologise.  I was expressing my views on what I had seen on the TV.  I have no idea on what happens behind the scenes or when the cameras are turned off.  If, as you say, this lady now has a very happy and well balanced puppy then that is great.  What this does mean though is that the TV company have chosen to show us an ill prepared and presumably inexperienced owner taking a puppy home and this will make no difference at all as to whether you end up with a well balanced adult dog.  This is obviously not the case in most instances.   I was a very inexperienced owner when I bought my puppy last year and spent a long time before purchase, reading lots and watching training videos.  Once she was home I used this forum constantly seeking advice from some very experienced people on this forum.  I do disagree with your comment that even an experienced person can be ill prepared.  If you are buying any animal then there is no excuse for not doing what you can to be prepared beforehand but of course, things crop up that you hadn't foreseen.   I haven't passed comment on the rest of the programme because I wasn't able to watch it all.

Watched the first three episodes of this last night.  I found it very entertaining!  As a new dog owner myself, I'm really not in a position to criticize, although there were some moments when I had to grit my teeth (woman totally unprepared and taking puppy home on train, toddler constantly bothering puppy).  There were also some lump-in-throat moments too such as the autistic child meeting the therapy dog.  I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes to see how the owners and puppies progress 

Also - Men Behaving Badly (with dogs).  Did anyone notice that Neil Morrissey narrated this, and Martin Clunes narrated the recent "Secret Lives of Dogs"?

There is nothing wrong with taking a puppy home on a train. With my Jake I had to get a bus then 3 trains to get him and the same back. I brought him back in my arms. Admittedly I took collar and lead in case he needed to get down quickly for the toilet

Nearly kissed the screen last night when the Behaviourist went through, with the owners' of the young rescue dog, about how diet affects behaviour and gave advice on how much exercise dogs need! The improvement in this dog, after having, (was it?) 4 previous homes, was fantastic to see.

They also brought her in to help with the Leonberger's behaviour so that we could all relax a little more

How amazing is the mother of the children where the Therapy Dog went? It seems that, as the dog is wearing a recognisable harness, that she is getting help and support with training the dog. She is still doing a fantastic job given all the challenges of her family.
