Anyone watching this?  I can't believe the lives some poor puppies have and I can't believe any breeder would let a leonburger pup go to someone living in a flat! I find myself screaming at the TV in frustration or screwed up with embarrassment..  The programme does make some good comments and all I can hope is it will put some people who think they might like a dog realise that they couldn't cope.

I haven't because I had read some comments about it, and I suspect I would react very much like you would like to! I have heard some good things about the new pet training programme on a Friday evening with Nando Brown but unfortunately it is not being broadcast in Scotland. 
 
I was very hopeful of the chap with his border collie pup. He seemed very sensible even though he lives in a very small space. For those that are not watching it - he got it to train as a mountain rescue dog. He started off taking advice on the "find it" training and all was going well until the dog started to clear off and not come when called. He realised he had got it wrong and admitted that he had not done any basic training before embarking on the "rescue" training.

What channel is Nando Brown on please @excuseme?
 
Friday ITV. Teach my pet to do that

Mountain  rescue man doing a good job, dog out and about all day.  Can't see leonburger woman doing much! Or those poor chihuahua  people.  Golden retriever doing ok eventually as also cocker spaniel  I would have locked that child in the dogs crate and let the poor puppy have another time out spot elsewhere!!!!

nb.  I could starts on Supervet but no doubt that's been done!!!
 
I hope they follow the pups through to adulthood. So many end up in rescue, especially when they are bought for children and the children use interest.

I have written, in the past, to my MP suggesting that breeders be required, by law, to take any pup that they breed back if it requires rehoming. This would cause the puppy farmers huge problems and many backyard breeders would probably give up too. Only the truly committed breeders, who take back their pups anyway, would continue in business.

The rescue programme on at the moment was interesting when a family turned up wanting a dog for one child and a cat for the other child. They managed to persuade them to take two kittens instead. A great solution as cats virtually look after themselves once the children lose interest in them.
 
This programme is on my list to watch, from the bits I've seen it looked quite interesting.  I hope it's not too upsetting.

@Juliatee - yep, Supervet's been done (see my thread elsewhere).  From your comment I take it you don't like the programme?  I think it's great - and sometimes sad - and there's no doubting the guy's a genius.
 
I think he is amazing too, but I find him irritating!!! Ego the size of a house but deservedly so.  I often wonder how long some of the dogs with spinal surgery live and it would be good to have a follow up series, as you suggest with the puppy programme.

Hope Animal rescue manages to rehome lots of animal

I watched the beginning with the woman and the leonburger.  I also found it excruciating, the poor puppy was dragged through an awful journey home and then into a home in which there appeared no preparation or training had been done at all.  The poor puppy doesn't stand a chance.  The woman seemed to be taken by complete surprise when the pup, weed several times and poohed around the flat.  I think it very likely that it will be one that is rehomed.  I can imagine that some people would have found it very funny to see her running around after it but not so funny for the poor puppy.  I didn't get to to see the rest of the programme and hopefully things got better.

I agree with you Juliatee, I also find him extremely irritating with an ego the size of a house.  He is undoubtedly a very clever man who performs amazing surgery but I'm not always comfortable with what these poor animals go through. 
 
No @Peegee it did not get better! The breeder wants shooting for letting that completely unprepared woman walk away with one of her puppies.

I am having sleepless night now worrying about some of those puppies. I even worry for the Pug breed because the Pug is being made to look so cute that everyone will want one!
 
Oh dear.  These TV companies have a lot to answer for.  Entertainment at the expense of a puppy's well being is so irresponsible.
 
 I should qualify my "worry". The puppies are not being harmed at the moment. They are all having a whale of a time. MY worry is the behaviour problems being stored up for the future. Our only hope is that the behaviourist will step in on each case and resolve the problems but not before the general public have seen all the pitfalls that lie in wait for unprepared people.
 
I think that is the gist of it gypsymums - hopefully the general public WILL realise how hard it is to rear a happy well behaved dog.  Hopefully none of these situations were quite as bad as we were led to believe.  There is never any discussion about toilet training!, That poor leonburger!,

And another thing.  Why do people dress up their dogs.  They are dogs for goodness sake!,. I have a black dog and all her accoutrements are black. I even draw the line at a coloured harness or lead, but I guess that is just my particular preferences!

I agree again Julietee!  I don't mind coloured leads so much, but hate dog clothes.  I also cringe inside when someone refers to me as Evie's mummy!  
 
Must say I'm the same, my Folly is not a baby or my kid, she's a dog and much loved because she's a dog with a lovely temperament. As to clothing, as she's a Whippet she has warm coats waterproof coats and warm and waterproof coats, but no other breed I have had have ever been dressed.
 
 I am sure you all realise I mean fancy dress!  Of course my dog has functional clothing, and I agree about the mummy thing!

This programme may help people realise that there is more to having a puppy than perhaps they realise!

Why a Breeder allowed a single person to take a large breed puppy home alone on a long train journey without help or a Carrier is ridiculous and dangerous!

Perhaps a PRE-Puppy Class could help some people, as to what to expect and what to do.

My dog is not a "fur-baby" or a substitute for a child.  I admire dogs for who and what they are, and share our lives and home together.
 
I can assure you all the lady with the leonburger has not rehoned the pup. She is doing really well now and is well behaved and now 9 months old.

Then I suspect that the TV company have done some clever editing to make it more 'entertaining', which I still think sends out the wrong message to potential puppy owners.  Even worse really if people think they can bring a new puppy into their home with no preparation and little apparent understanding of a puppies needs and then hey presto they end up with a well behaved and well adjusted nine month old .
