I think you misunderstood me, two litters in the nest at the same time, not an ideal situation IMO. Why would any normal thinking person mate two bitches at the same time? I must be old fashioned in my idea of breeding, when people only bred to have a pup to bring out.

I don't really want to get involved with this as im not a breeder and don't

really have any experience or anything that i could add to it. I just had a

look in to see why it was gaining a lot of interest.

 

But that remark i have quoted i keep looking at, i don't understand it, does

'bring out' mean show and are you saying people should breed to do this or

you don't think they should. I must be a bit slow today i dont know what

way to read your reply.

 

And if its saying you don't think people should bred only to get a pup to

show......why not.......is this a bad thing to do?

 

And as i said its purely out of curiosity im asking, no hidden reason, just

a simple question........so no jumping on me

No, "Bertha" is saying that the only reason that people should breed or used to breed was when they wanted something to show.

Perhaps to explain a little further.

Most folk who have a litter should have the litter to keep a pup not just for the fun(money).

I would only breed to keep a pup(for showing) & would hope others would breed to keep a pup(for showing/racing/work or simply as a pet)

Again, like AnnSa, just asking out of curiosity ... but your reply got me thinking.

I think I'm right in saying that where bitch owners are often pilloried for breeding if they have no intention of keeping a puppy the owners of stud dogs generally aren't. Not surprising given that a well used stud may father a number of litters in any given year. But perhaps if the owners of stud dogs came under the same pressure we wouldn't be worrying about excessive puppy numbers. Just wondering what other folks take on this is

We have only ever bred to keep something for ourselves....usually a dog and bitch as Ryan & I both handle,but this time we kept two bitches as we have really reached our limit with entire males (we have 4 entires and 1 neuter...the entires are still being shown) and you have raised a very valid point indeed,I do honestly think that stud owners should come under the same scrutiny as bitch owners,as you say they can certainly contribute to the numbers!!! Maybe your comment/question might make people think a bit more before they solely blame the bitch owners? Incidently our dogs are'nt at public stud

would putting stud owners under pressure reduce the puppy boom? i doubt it would make much difference other than increase the gene pool diversity tbh, though in some cases that would be a rather good thing for any breed down the line. all it would mean is the less responsible breeders would just seek an, or any, alternative sire for their pups. kind of a double edged sword really, and complex when you get down to it.

many people frown upon having more than one litter at a time, but though i personally wouldnt/couldnt do it lol, there can be advantages. aside from getting it all 'done in one hit', if anything were to happen to one bitch, you have another to hand who could step in. or perhaps the ideal stud can only be used at that time, and another bitch has already been covered? ultimately its the quality a breeder can give to a litter or litters. as said, some people shouldnt have even one, and yet others can and do provide a good start for one or more.

when it comes to back to backers, again something im not happy about, there may well be reasons why it has to be done: what if the breeder is contractually obliged to produce x amount of pups/litters? ive heard of some people who have bought a bitch under certain terms, ie getting a reduced price or whatever, on the condition that in return they have to mate to a certain dog and give their breeder one or two pups from a litter, or whatever their arrangement is. now, say if something happened to that litter? most breeders would be reasonable youd think, but what if they werent? likewise what if you had bred your bitch to a dog with the payment for stud being a pup, and they were to die for whatever reason? or they wanted a particular sex, and you had a same sex litter without what they wanted? technically you would still owe the stud owner a pup in payment. most of us have 'gentlemens agreements', with nothing being put in writing, so whether we like it or not, these situations have indeed arrisen. doesnt make it right or pleasant, but there you go.

i think what all of us here CAN agree on is animal welfare on the whole. we are all against repetetive breeding of bitches, too young bitches being mated, puppies being churned out for money, because we all know what corners must be cut to actually turn any kind of profit, etc etc etc.

When I had a dog at stud I was very particular about the bitches he mated and knew where all his puppies were. I do think stud dog owners have a responsibility for their dogs offspring, or should have.

The problem is there will always be the people, I won't call them breeders, who will use the nearest dog, no thought. Neither bitch or dog owner having a clue about bloodlines etc., or inherited/genetic problems.

The responsible will always do the right thing.

Yes i think stud dog owners all have a responsibility too but unfortunately a lot of folk dont see it that way. If they have a Ch dog its good money in stud fee's & they pass the buck saying " well i didnt breed the litter it wasnt my bitch"!!

These people often let their dog be used on anything & everything from the pet bitch down the road to even cross breeds, hey its all stud fee's.

I had 4 Ch males plus 2 other RCC winners & none were ever at stud full stop. No it didnt make me popular & yes it peed many folk off BUT.... hey i sleep at night. :thumbsup:
