Is this style of grooming only done for showing purposes? If so, does anyone know the reasons why or how it started?

The breed has its roots in Germany and the cut came from its origins a hunting dog. The poodle was an adept hunter, but his heavy coat impaired his ability to be quick in the water, as it got very heavy when wet. So, hunters began clipping the dog’s fur to allow it greater freedom of movement in the water, but also to keep its joints warm. So, puffs of hair were left on the ankle and hip joints (now known as bracelets or pom-poms). The hair at the front of the dog was kept longer to protect his vital organs.
More clips were developed later when the poodle became a regular performer in the circus with clowns. The poodle was chosen for its intelligence and ability to perform tricks and entertain the crowds.

The same cut is sometimes used on spiders...
Apologies for those who now have the heebie-jeebies - this is a spider with a fungal infection which didn't half shock me when I found it in my shed, but I still found it fascinating!

I have no idea why people do that to poodles, it looks ridiculous IMO I’ve only got ‘half’ a poodle and she will never be looking like that, not even the poodle half
