Why do ppl think reputable breeders dont need to advertise?

I have the odd litter and i am very reputable. We do everything correctly down to feeding a raw diet and getting pups vet checked before they leave us.

However, I need to advertise my pups or how else will people know they are available.

I have only ever used the free sites epupz, pets4homes, preloved etc and i know unscrupulous people use these sites too, but these people are everywhere not just on these sites.

I have read recently on various forums that these sites are only occupied by BYB and puppy farms but I advertise on there and i've definately seen other well known kennels on there too.

It is also said that reputable breeders don't need to advertise.

Why do people think reputable breeders don't need to advertise? I'm sure some must have waiting lists but not all.

As a reputable breeder who doesnt show, if i just sat here waiting on recommendations from say, previous puppy owners, I'd end up with a lot of dogs!

The sweeping statement re reputable breeders not advertising seems to be a very controversial and untrue.

Any opinions?

I agree with you there - you do need to advertise, as you say, it's a way of letting people know you have pups available, or on the way. There will always be unscrupulos breeders on occasion, but i really believe it's the responsibility of the prospective owners to do research regarding the breeder, and a good breeder will most likely vet the owner also, which hopefully leads to everyone being happy in the long run​? Or short run when it comes to pups lol

Reputable breeders, who don't show, will find it difficult to find good homes. All you can do is advertise in reputable magazines (Dogs Today used to have a little Black Book of good breeders) and then vet the new owners as much as possible.

Advertising is definitely not bad, I've never actually heard that said about breeders before! How else would you get in front of the great homes that are seeking specific breeds of dogs?

We breed the occasional litter and do not need to advertise. I think the word reputable comes from the same root as reputation. Because we are active in our breed - we show and have raced in the past we know a lot of people who own he same breeds. We are also members of the breed clubs and all our puppies are pedigree dogs registered with the kennel club. All of these contacts and activities mean people know us and our dogs and so our puppies are sought after because people meet our dogs and like them.

When you have many contacts in your breed what tends to happen is that if one breeder is contacted by someone looking for a puppy they will know who currently has puppies and usually will refer them on if they don't have puppies available themselves. Our vet recommends us too and if course previous owners .

Breed clubs often have breeders lists with puppies for sale. The kennel club also have puppy lists. If we had no contacts I would advertise in "The Dog World " newspaper in the breed notes.
