Why Are My Smiley's Odd?!

Everytime I try and do a smiley face :- ) it turns into a whistling face?? Any ideas or am I just being thick???

I'm guessing you're writing your smileys with a nose - leave it out and you should get

I think its the - in the smiley face - its okay if you just do a
