Whippetts And A Cat

Personally i would put the dogs in a cage and then bring the cat in in a cat carrying cage and put the two cages facing each other and then see what rection you get. If the reaction is not too bad let the dogs out one at a time to see if the still accept the caton their territory. If it is still going well at this stage then again cage the dogs and let the cat out for a stroll around. If they do not accept each other from the start the you will have to keep one or the other caged while the other is out untill acceptance is reached if it is. Personnally i think bringing an adult cat into the home of whippets could very well be dangerous so real care must be taken

When we got Jack,our late whippet,he was 8 months old and Chilli cat was was 2
She is a bit of a wild child as hubby found her in a bush in Wales, or shall we say she found hubby!.
At first Jack just wanted to chase her and lick her even mount her,Chilli was having none of it.
Chilli is a house cat and hid for a few days,only coming out for food.She did stop talking to me totally wouldnt even look at me! however they became friends,firm friends.I think a crate is a sensible thing.When ever Jack would get ready to chase cat we would shout LEAVE THE CAT ALONE! he soon got the message.Eventually a " look" was all he needed to keep him in check.This can work,just be very patient.

Have your whippets ever lived with a cat before??
I know if we tried to introduce a cat to our household (not that i ever would) all hell would break loose. (w00t)
If the whippets are used to cats from an early age then thats a different kettle of fish, but introducing a cat to mature whippets IMO is a definate no no.

I agree with Dawn here,our whippets would kill a cat,though we ourselves have one BUT all the dogs with one exception were pups when introduced to the cat and the only other one was Moss our eldest whippet he was an adult when we got Archie but Archie was a kitten,so that is different too!

This really could be just asking for trouble,especially with two dogs as one inevitably will egg on the other.

Be careful but unless your dogs react very badly to the cat I think they will eventually tolerate one another. I would definately get a crate, for everyones safety. Has the cat lived with dogs before, if so your job will be a bit easier.
A cat can use it's claws a lot faster than a dog can use its teeth and cats will go for the face/eyes. I've got lurchers & a beddy & cats,but would NEVER EVER leave them together when we are not in. The older lurcher is 100% safe o
but I wouldn't trust the others. Take it slowly, leave the cat an escape route & get a plant spray, a quick squirt up the bum works wonders when things get a bit too much (w00t)

My last whippet was fine with cats, we didn't have one but the one that lived a few doors down visited and they would lay together in the garden andthe cat came for walks when we took our whippet, but the 2 I have now would kill one if they managed to catch one best of luck :thumbsup:
