Whippets V Italien Greyhounds

can you all tell me what the temperamnet differences between whippets and italien greyhounds are , pros and cons of each. I love the look of both breeds .

I have a whippet now but my previous 2 dogs were IG's. I went for a whippet this time as both the IG's had broken legs - I would add that I rescued them and the legs had been broken before they came to me. I was a complete nervous wreck with the last IG - every time she jumped on the settee I was frightened she would damage herself, I had to lift her in and out of the car so she wouldn't jump. So we went for a whippet as they are a bit sturdier.

Temperament wise - I personally find no difference. Both are gentle and loving - great with children and totally lovable altogether. :wub: The only difference is size imo.

I always wanted an IG but a few years ago a breeder put me off by saying there a bit nippy (agressive) and very hard to house train. Looking at the IG threads on here think she was talking rubbish. Good luck with whatever you get. :thumbsup:

Mind you Paula, Im sure Zilloot (put me right if Im wrong please) did mention Zoomie would be a bit lazy and prefer doing it indoors sometimes when it was horrible weather - but arnt they all a bit like that at times. :blink: :wacko:

Ive heard too they are more difficult to house train but :unsure: ...Im sure the Iggy owners would be able to tell you here.

well, we have 2 whippet dogs and 2 italian greyhounds and I think we all agree in our house that there is definately a difference!!

our boys are sturdy, steady, quiet and calm - as long as there are no birds, cats, dogs, mice, leaves or anything else that moves! They are affectionate, loving and generally clean o

our girls are the total opposite, except for the birds, cats, dogs etc (worse than the whippets!) :devil:

Add to that the following facts:

- they can climb anything (including up your body if you refuse to pick them up!)

- they steal anything that you don't give them when they want it

- they sing like you would not believe, especially when waiting in the queue at the post office

- their tongues can get to the most difficult to reach places (ear drums, eye balls, back teeth - theirs and ours!) :x

- they can be a real bloody pain :rant: they love digging into your neck and face, they sit on the paper when you are trying to read it, they ask to go out when a good film is on and they squeeze in behind your back until you find that you've got cramp from watching tv at an uncomfortable angle

- they worm their way into your heart and time like nothing else (sorry whippets ), they are very addictive and they are totally gorgeous :*

Seriously, ours are great, they are as tough as old boots even though they look like they would blow over in the breeze (they actually crawl in even the warmest of breezes, they hate wind!) and they will do as they are told most of the time (when they are not being free spirits)

On the down side, they aren't as easy to live with as our whippets, it is like having babies cos you really have to think about who they are going to be mixing with at the local park, about where you can go and what you can do with them and it takes ages to go anywhere with them cos everyone stops to ask if they are pups, and if not then what are they, where, how much, etc . . . .

My mind says that next time round I'll get a lovely easy rough coated lurcher, my heart says 'iggie' :wub:

And I nearly forgot! House training - very hit and miss!! As long as they are in the house alone or its during the day, they're fine, but they are not great in the house over night :angry: I think its cos they can not believe that you would be in the same building as them but not actually want them to sleep in your bed :lol:

Oh Doris - how I envy you - the picture was brill. I know what you mean about people stopping you when out with an IG, my last one weighed 6lb - she was 2 when she came to me. I love Sid my whippet to bits, but I still get a lump in my throat remembering my 2 lovely Italians. I bet there is never a dull moment in your house.

My mum has been breeding and showing Italian greyhounds for many years, some of you on here will know of her and touch wood has never had a serious injury, yes you have to be a bit careful with them not jumping onto slippery tables tops but i have all that with my mad whippet who runs just as crazy as iggies do (w00t)

I know what you mean about the howling though sad thing was we all used to join in with them god knows what the neighbours thought (w00t)

As my little Iggle :wub: :wub: will be sleeping in my bed hopefully once grown up will be able to hang on 'til morning. Otherwise I'm going to see some lovely Highland night skies over the years! (w00t)

OMG they ARE siamese cats reincarnated (w00t) Do they bounce off the ceiling as well? :lol: I don't think I could cope with more than one attention-seeking face magnet, so no Iggy for a while I think.

Littleminx, what is your mother's affix? I've been following Iggys/joined the IG club when I was about 10 (long, long ago now).

Her name Helen Davis and she is Jemalsheva which i am in partnership with, she dosnt show quite as much now but does still judge, she made up a lot of champions and got bob at crufts twice :thumbsup:

Everyone has seen or heard of some very iffy legs but mine came from someone who wants to breed dogs that can run, jump and do what dogs do, so I try to just be careful instead of smothering them in bubble wrap :thumbsup:

I too wanted an IG that could lead a normal dog life. With advice from Jan & help from Alfie I have been lucky enough to find someone who breeds dogs that can run & jump etc & is prepared to let me have one of her puppies
