Hi, I wonder if anyone has any advice. My beautiful whippet Rocket, he is 4 in September has never been ill before. About 4 weeks ago he started doing loads of reverse sneezing, took him to the vet who said it was just fine and nothing to worry about. A week later it was getting worse so saw a different vet who said he had an allergy to something and put him on some anti inflammatory tablets for a week which did calm it down but didn't go away completeleyfor about a fortnight. On Thursday it really flared up again but now thick stringly snot started coming out of his nose. Took him back to the vet the next morning and the vet said its avirus and has now put him on antibiotics; it is now Sunday night but there isn't really any improvement. Its not so bad when he is around the house he just snorts and sniffs a bit but when he goes out for a walk we get the thick snot again. They told me to go back on Friday if there is no improvement. He is not at all ill in himself, still running around the garden fine and playing with the children. If anyone has any advice or has experienced this I would greatly appreciate it. xx

Hi my mum had a whippet who sneezed and snotted all her life, we to had her at the vets so many time we lost count each saying something different she had anti inflammatory tablets, tests of all sorts, steroids and still it continued, in the end vets said it was just what she did and nothing was wrong, but I guess they were right because we lost her this year at the grand old age of (almost) 17 years :)

I hope you find out what's wrong with your little one soon :)

Sorry to hear Rocket is having this annoying problem , hope you get to the bottom of it soon .

Where also from Leeds

Thanks Sadie and Trish x

There's no sign of antibiotics working yet unfortunately and he seems really fed up.He's developed a phobia to the sight of the medicine bottle and disappears at tablet time! Children are really spoiling him rotten so he is having some nice times.

Sounds like rhinitis. Not easy to treat I am afraid. Steroid drops help. Go back to the vet and ask him about it.

My Macy has the exact same symptoms, she is now 10. You could try going back to the vets but I dont think you will get an answer. We have been told its Rhinitus and we just manage it. She had all the tests, she was in and had a camera inserted in her nose to check if any foreign body but nothing. She is fine in herself has good days and snotty days!! You will get used to taking a hanky out with you as your dog may or may not have a sneezing attack. I used to worry at first but now I am used to it. I do find that when she has had a good run it sort of clears her head I know that may sound silly but that is the case.

I try not to make too much of a fuss about it as I found if I did she stressed now she has a big sneeze and off we go.

We did try piriton for a while but that really didnt make any difference, sometimes of the year are worse than others like early spring but we really cannot work out what sets it off. I guess its just one of her things and we have to deal with it. Other than that she is tough as old boots!

I do hope you get some good advice from your vet but dont worry about it your Rocket will be fine.

my dogs started sneezing and had a runny nose and then later a sore throat, vet said kennel cough,

Thanks for all your replies. I really appreciate it. Been at the vet twice more. They want to take him in next week for the camera up nose thing that Macy had and they want to do xrays. They said he needs a general anasthetic for this so Im not too keen.

Macy's story really helped thanks for that. I think that it is going to turn out to be rhinitus that Rocket has got too. The only thing that makes me think it might be something stuck up there is that the running nose is only one nostril

Vet thinks in Rockets case its not a virus, kennel cough or anything because he's too well.

I thought that Macy had something stuck up her nose but nothing found and now sometimes its one nostril then the other no rhyme nor reason to it. Macy had to have anaesthetic and after there was some blood in her snot. Knowing what I know now I feel it was all a waste of time and lots of money but you know how Rocket is and you have to have everything checked out. I hope it all goes ok.
