Whippet Toilet Training

We now have a whippet that is 13 weeks old, we acquired her when she was 8 weeks old, generally she is very good. However we are having problems with her toilet training.

After she has had a sleep we take her outside giving the instruction of 'Toilet outside! of which she goes outside to do her toileting. Other times we leave the door open and she will go outside herself, when she is in the utility area where she sleeps. But when she is in the lounge, on occasions she has urinated on the carpet, then we say NO OUTSIDE TOILET!! but this is still a problem, as she does not seem to be getting it! Are we going about this in the correct manner?

We got puppy training pads from the pet store. Evertime she had an accident, we would carry her to the pads and tell her pee pee on the paper. She clocked on pretty quickly with these. The pads also have a scent on them that makes the pups go to them when they need to urinate - the absorb the urine and elimate any odour. We kept just one at the door and then eventually put them outside. She would be in her bed and when she needed to go she would trot like a good girl straight to the pad. Each time she would do this off her own back we would make a big fuss of her which she lapped up! (w00t) These were a godsend.

At 13 weeks she is still very young, and too young to know 100% that outside is the place. You still need to be diligent. Don't rely on her to know she has to go out the door. You need to watch her signs and TAKE her out and reward her BIG TIME every single time she goes out.

If you catch her in the act pick her up take her outside and tell her 'peepee outside'. Don't shout. You can say a firm NO when picking her up, but when she's outside make a big happy deal out of doing it outside so she doesn't become afraid of peeing in front of you.

Our rules for puppies are that if the feet hit the floor it goes out. So definitely after sleeping, after rough play and they stop that counts as feet on the floor. The second they stop playing they go out. A few minutes after eating. Basically every hour or two if you haven't had a reason to between times.

The more YOU take them and show them where they need to go the quicker they'll learn and be willing/able to do it themselves.

The trick is to recognise the signs that your puppy is even thinking of having a pee, take her out straight away and praise her when she has a pee outside. She'll soon get the hang of asking to go out.
