I was wondering if anyone could tell me the answers to the following questions.

1. Who was the first ever whippet to be given the title Champion?

2. Who was the first registered whippet in England?

3. What was the name of the first whippet to grace the show ring?

(I guess it would have to be the first winner to have been recorded!)

Would love to know the answers to these questions - have been searching for them but without luck (I guess I just don't know where to look!!). And if any of my fellow Aussies know the answers to the same questions as they relate to Australia - I'd love to know that too.

Many thanks.

You could try the VCA library at KCC park. Kylie & I found alot of stuff there when she was researching for the Australian Imports book she did at the Congress.

The first whippet champion in England was Ch.Zuber bred by H Vickers born on 12/4/1889. He was sored by White eye out of Herndell.

You could try obtaining the 1985 edition of "The Whippet" by Bo Bengtson. Apparently the whippet was first shown on July 28, 1876 at Woodside Park, Darlington. This is reported by C.H. Lane in "Dog Shows and Doggy People" The judge was Mr. J Fisher but there is no record of the dogs exhibited. On April 16, 1890 the Whippet Club applied for recognition by the Kennel Club. In 1891 five whippets were the first to be listed in the Kennel Club Stud Book as black & white, fawn & white, 2 brown & white and one was not described. A Mr. Vickers , of Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire ( am I right in thinking that the Clumber spaniel came from here?) owned the fawn & white bitch Herndell, born in 1886 and sired by Charlie out of Lizzie and her son Zuber as mentioned above. The above summarizes the information on page 72 of Bo Bengtson. Best of luck in your research, Stephen

 Many thanks folks for your answers. Really have to get myself some whippet books. Tend to turn to the internet for information these days and often find it lacking. Problem is, there's never much left for books after collars, leads, entries, treats, coats, etc., etc. Really have to stop spoiling these dogs :b

Just to confirm that the book by Bo Bengtson states that indeed the first whippet champion is 'Zuber' born 1889.

Taken from same book: 'At KC meeting 16 April 1890, a letter from Herbert Vickers was read, requesting official recognition for the whippet breed. Of the first five whippets listed in the KCSB of 1891, one of these belonged to Mr. Vickers being a fawn-and-white bitch Herndell, born in 1886 and sired by Charlie out of Lizzie and also owned her son Zuber. Zuber was sired by a dog named White Eye.'

Hope this is helpful.
