Our dog has been shedding fur all week, so I decided to get the hound glove out and give him a good brush. Enough fur came off to spin into a small jumper, I was amazed. Also a lot of nasty dandruffy stuff was loosened, so as it was a warm day I decided to give him a bath (w00t)

Not our favourite thing. He was very good while actually being bathed but saw his opportunity when being towelled and reckoned he deserved a treat for suffering such an indignity, so legged it straight over the fence. Luckily he never gets any further than nextdoor's fox and rat larder, so he was soon recovered, only very slightly muckier.

I was amazed by how much he'd changed colour when he was finally dry, much darker with all that bleached, dead fur gone. probably doesn't show in the pics. He usually looks a more golden fawn, now darker and more grey in hue. The sabling (black tips to fur) is a lot clearer now, mainly along his back.

One thing, he has a black patch on his tail, where the fur is really black and coarse. I've seen this on collies too.

Actually he hasn't done that for ages :luck: I think he might have had the odd improptue dip in the river initiated by OH  The underneath bit gets a hand wash every day, although it seems to retain it's pretty yellow colour whatever you do :x

Last time I bathed him, after a few hours of smelling lovely, he developed a really strong doggy odour, much worse than usual. I think the bath might have overstimulated the sebaceous glands or something. It wore off after about a week :)

what is the handsome lads name (always forget) :b

What mine? Gelert in theory, DOGG!!!! in working practise and Floyde when we're at the lurecoursing. He raced as Flaming Floyde, as no one could pronounce Gelert properly. Confusing this business of being a whippet.

I think he got off quite lightly in the naming stakes - his sister (see thread in ped racing) was 'Flaming Dippy Dip Stick' (w00t)

Hi All,

I love the pictures of your whippet Elizabeth, he is so handsome.

What is a hound glove and where does one get them from?

Also how often do you need to bathe a whippet and what fo you use to bathe his underneath everyday?

Mine was a rubbery glove thing from Hypervalue :- " He gave it a good chew afterwards in revenge (although he does seem to enjoy being brushed.

Re the yellow belly, just slightly damp kitchen paper or tissue, that's if he hasn't towelled it all off on my duvet first :x

My mother was a great fan of bathing the dog as often as possible, as a reaction I have only given ours 2 full baths in his life. It's usually too cold in the winter anyway, so OH just sponges any mud off with at towel. Bathing did seem to get rid of the scurfy stuff loosened by the brushing though, and some of the remaining loose hair. Maybe I'll do it next time he moults as well.

How often does everyone bathe theirs? You've got me worried now

Never if possible - in reality, maybe 3 yimes a year and that's only if there's so much dead bunny and cow poo in their coats that cutting the affected areas off is not do-able! (w00t)

excuse me, but what is this all about, 'moulting, smelling and bathing'

we've got a whippet because K9 ers said, 'they smell like biscuits, are very clean dogs' etc. etc. (w00t)

have you lulled me into a false sense of security here :- "

have to say I do think Ella smells like a dog and not a biscuit  but she has those gorgeous 'ear flowers' and she's got cute 'flowers' on the cheeks of her bum

p.s. Floyde looks like he's more comfortable now without his fluff 8)

I'm afraid that Nana being white gets a bath before every show, and in the summer that is most weekends, Tess gets one at the end of each season (so roughly every 6 months) of course if they roll in rotting fish or fox **** they have one the second they get home.

Nana swims in the Thames every day and Tess goes in too if its warm enough or if the stick I've thrown is enticing enough.

who said they smelled of biscuits? (w00t)

My old dog smelled of fried mushrooms, not at all nasty but you still wouldn't want to bottle it. Ours usually smells vaguely of pee, not surprising as his aim is terrible :- " :b

I won't ask about the flowers (w00t)

Interesting - last time his oil glands seemed to go into overdrive afterwards, he smelled more like a gundog for a few days.

there was a thread on here about whippets 'earflowers' the little bits at the front base of ears where the hair grows in a whorl, look at your dogs Moriarte and check out their BUTTOCKS you'll see them I'm sure, but don't let anyone see you doing it :- "
