I took my dads dog to the vets to get a pump/growth on its back leg sorted out we we're given antibiotics and pain killers and told to bring him back today for xray and biopsy and wrr told that today's treatment would be between 300 and 350 now they say that's xrays only what can I do this dog is my dads life so its not an option to not treat the leg I can pay but don't trust them

Hi nappster and welcome to DogForum :)

How very unprofessional of your vet! The cost of treatment should be given (as a ball park, at least) and that should be the cost of everything, not just the cost of the x-rays. Can I suggest that you query this with the practice manager? it's really not a good way to help people to afford the cost of a treatment if you give them an inaccurate cost estimate.

Potential outcomes from this:

The vet honours their initial estimate.

The vet reduces the cost somewhat from their current estimate.

The practice manager allows you to pay the cost in instalments.

You investigate the cost and take the dog to another vet instead.

I'd suggest you have it set up in your mind which of these you're going to aim for, and what terms you would accept before you consider moving to a different vet instead. There's no reason at all why you have to stay with the same vets.

It's also worth checking whether your dad qualifies for subsidised treatment from the PDSA or Blue Cross. Contrary to what some people may say, my experience of them is that they offer just as good treatment and sometimes more investigations/treatments than I would expect from any other vet, so if your dad qualifies for their treatment then that may be a way forward.

I hope you get the lump addressed, the dog back on the road to recovery and your dad back with his best mate soon :)

Probably worth changing vets if they don't sort it out for you. Sounds like they have not gone about it the right way.
