Tracking Whippets

I know this is the showing forum but I wasn't sure where to put my little brag and I wanted to make sure the showing people saw it - so chose here, hope no-one minds.

k9 Member "Schmick" has two whippets that I bred: Aslan Show Me the Money - "Nockie" - (Gilnockie Ace of Spades (Imp UK) x BIS Ch Aslan Chanson D'Amour) and Aslan DirtySexyMoney - "Freddie" - (Gr Ch Aslan That's Amore x Ch Phoenway Blue Anjill). They are involved in Tracking - an unusual pursuit for a sighthound, one has to admit. They had a trial on the weekend and Nockie passed her TD2 with a "VERY GOOD" (one step down from the top rank of 'Excellent').

Freddie passed his first test at only 6 mths of age and yesterday was heading for his second with an 'excellent' at the half way mark. Unfortunately he lost concentration and had to start again which resulted in a fail but his owners are bouyed by the fact that he was doing so well to beging with - he is only a young dog and the testers are all saying that he shows lots of promise.

I am a very proud breeder.

They were tracking live people ... members of their families. But now that Nockie has got her TD2, she is only allowed to track unknown people from now on.

I'll have to get 'Schmick' on here to explain more - I don't know a whole lot about it, I'm learning from Graeme.

But this is what has me in awe. They're not following the scent of a kill - they're following the track of a person.

And this is why the sighthounds are not always so good at it...

Example - Frazer lays the track for Nockie, Graeme is her handler. Once the track is laid, Frazer has to hide in waiting. Early in her training, Nockie's sighthound instincts kicked in - after following the track a little way she would stop and scan the horizon. If Frazer was not well enough hidden and moved even the slightest bit and she saw him, she'd forget about the track and go scooting off across the field in a straight line to Frazer!

Now they've had to train that out of her - how one does that I have no idea. And how do you train them to track someone they don't even know and have no interest in? That just boggles my mind.

I've had the joy of being bait - I was asked to bring along 3 items of personal clothing or such (eg: sock, worn shirt, hair tie) put them in a box so no one else touch's them, the bait (person) follows a marked track (which was laid a few days previously) taking the markers with them, you have to stomp and brush past as much bush and grass to lay the scent, then at the end of the marked track you need to find a nice cosy place to hide out of sight and wait until the dog actually finds you.

I was told to take along a book as my track involved there to be an hour delay before the dog started, I couldn't really concentrate on the book as every little russel of grass and such all I could think of was it a snake. But from my little vantage point I could hear and and start to see the dog getting closer, it truely is an amazing feat these dogs do especially those that are trained to do search and rescue.

So hats off to Graeme and his two wonderful whippies - look forward to hearing more of their progress. If you get the chance Lana to be bait or such do so - it's amazing to watch.

Sorry Meddling - I just have to set you straight ... her name is NoCkie (from her father's prefix "Gilnockie") "NOOkie" has a whole other meaning over here :b (don't know about in the UK). I was worried about this confusion happening when they chose the name.... 8)

Yes Cristina it is amazing to watch.

Of course we are still learning the science behind it, wind drift, top scent, ground scent, return of scent after rain and I don't think humans will ever know exactly how the dogs do it as there is also a lot of ESP going on between dog and handler. We just do it now so forget to marvel at just how clever the tracking dogs are.

It was Nockie and Freddie's 2nd trial last weekend. If they are successful at their TD3 Trial they gain there Tracking Dog Title and move on to training for their Tracking dog excellent Title.

TD3 Queensland

Track is laid the day before with flags set every 50 meters. A map is drawn up by the Steward. The Handler does not know the track and must trust the dog. On the morning of the trial at sunrise the Tracklayer (an Unknown Person) drops an Article of clothing (that they have had on their body for a min. of 30 mins.) at the start flag, walks the set track in a normal way (not scratch the ground etc) and removes the flags as she goes and then hides at the end of the track. The Handler is followed by the Steward and Judge. Two more articles of clothing are dropped along the way. There are 2 turns, the track is 800 meters long and the dog must indicate at least one article to gain a Pass. They are graded on how well they cover the course. Indicating the Article is standing over, sitting on, dropping on or returning the Article to the Handler. How well they do this helps adds their Rating.

There are 7 levels TD1 -TD7 and they just keep getting more intense for the dog and handler.

The dogs just love it.

Wow what great achievements for you all - congratulations from all at Isilwane who love to see Whippets (and Ridgebacks) doing different things like this. Maybe this would be better to try Miss Electra at than Flyball - have to get the kennel maids on to it :lol: we've certainly got the space to do it.

UPDATE 08-07-09

Nockie gained her TRACKING TITLE this weekend after passing her TD3 with a "Very Good " Rating

Freddie passed his TD2 with a "Very Good" Rating (Fail, Pass, Good, Very Good and Excellent)

The Tracking Trial was held at Tansey a 5hr drive south conducted by "The Gympie Dog Obedience Club Qld."

Nockie will become ASLAN SHOW ME THE MONEY TD after ratification by CCCQ.

We are all very happy little Vegemites
