Hi everyone,

well yesterday night i was giving jesse his regular cuddle after his evening walk, and we were so shocked by what we saw. One of the toes on his back paw is completely swollen to about 3 times the size it should be! It was very red and sore, and bless his heart he was licking it. :( It seemed to be bleeding so we cleaned it with some dog antibacterial solution and will be taking him to the vets today. To begin with we thought there might be something in it, like a thorn perhaps, but I can't seem to see anything. Bless his heart, my poor little boy.

Any ideas anyone? I'll post a photo tonight.

Not sure as it could be so many different things, just wanted to say good luck at the Vets and I hope it feels better soon

Bradley often has the same problem as he keeps "doing" his nail bed! He cuts his foot right where the nail grows from and that swells up. Antibiotics always clear him up ok. The problem is as soon as he is sound and it stops hurting then he starts going loopy again and will often injure it again!!

My old dog Chip used to get swollen toes quite often - his nails grew pretty quick and Yes I used to think the nailbed was at fault. He often stood on sharp thorns too - and would hold his foot up pathetically as is asking me to take it out. :(

I just used salty water to bathe them, but others on here may have better advice.

Sorry no experience with swollen toes, but hope Jesse is better soon. :luck:

:( Sounds like there is some infection in there (puss) and if it dosnt clear up then I would ask the Vet.

Through experience with our racers (yes this happens a lot!) it sounds like a nailbed infection and i would just get a course of antibiotics from the vets to be on the safe side

Had the same problem with a GSP, swollen toe and no foreign body or cut?

Course of antibiotics from the vet and bathing the toe in salt water, especially after having a walk and he was great!

A very kind person told me of a remedy for nail bed infection. Make up a solution of some Epsom Salts (really cheap from the chemist) and water. Make the solution as hot as you think the dog can bear, and soak the foot for 5-10 minutes twice daily. It draws out the infection, and dries it up in no time. I couldn't believe how soon it was better.

Just one point though, if your dogs toe is 3 times the size, it could be broken or sprained - both would cause swelling and inflammation. Let us know how he gets on - will be thinking of him. Our boy has had toe problems, so I can sympathise. Good luck :luck:

Forgot to say, I used about 2 tablespoons of Epsom Salts in a bowl of water - I used a microwaveable bowl, so I could reuse the solution for a couple of days, just reheating it each time.

Will try that with Bod (Bradley).
