Hi all whippy owners,

What a great forum. Since I joined I have read loads of your posts. Its really reassuring that my dogs are 'normal' and that I haven't stuffed up as an owner.

I am not new to whippets. I have a 3 year old bitch, Izzy. From day one she fitted into my rountine. She woke up and was fed and I would then supervise her but if I needed to be away doing something else then she would be crated and that would be her nap time. She loved her crate and I now have a well behaved companion who has the run of two rooms day and night.

I now have a new puppy. A 9 week old little boy, Albie. He is a devil but I love him dearly. He is completely different. He to is being crated although he is not as keen. I leave him alone for short periods of time in his crate, praising good behaviour ignoring bad.

At night he goes into his crate without a problem at about 11.30 but wakes up 2 or 3 times crying and yelping. We go down and let him out to wee/poo, keeping things quiet then he goes back to bed, sometimes more readily than others.

So here goes the barrage of questions. Sorry in advance for boring you all.

I did think about leaving him to cry but 9 weeks is still very little to hold on I am right do you think? If I do let him out should I decided when to get him up or let him tell us? At what age will he be able to go through the night without having to go and will this be an instinctive thing or will he need encouragement?

As I never had this problem with Izzy I would really like your advice.

Thanks you all in advance

Angela

Hi and welcome to K9. I'm glad you are finding K9 so informative....it's a great place. Hopefully we'll see some photos of your two whippets once you've settled in, so to speak. :)

This question comes up quite regularly. Have a look in the FAQ section, second page, and there is a thread called, Night Time . I hope this link works....

Good luck :luck: Let us know how you get on.

I was in a similar position to you a few months ago.

Our 6month puppy now goes through the night so you will get there eventually.

9 weeks is too young to be expected to go all the way through.

If he whines then go down as you have been doing and let him out quietly.

He will soon learn that if he whines he will only get to go out to the toilet.

Good luck. :luck:

Sounds to me like you are doing all the right things!

We have been incredibly fortunate and all our whips have managed to go all the way through the night without an accident from day one. Not sure if we have just been very lucky, but I think whippets are very clean.

By about 10 weeks both Holly and Ruby were only having the occasional accident during the day, usually caused by too much excitement!

The boys were both a bit older when we got them, so we've never had any problems there.

I'd love to see some photos of Albie and good luck with him :luck:
