Tilly Not Happy

Tilly is turning a bit weird with other dogs she seems to be fighten of them and with this she she is showing her teeth and im worried she going to have apop at the next dog she is fighten of. Any advice?

is she going through 'puberty'? its more common with males, but some dogs go weird around people/places/things etc at this stage for no apparent reason. if this is her 'problem', the trick isnt to humour her, as these things can then become ingrained, but to try and encourage her to socialise, rewarding good behavior etc.

my bitch went nutty coming up to her 1st season, actually trying to FIGHT fully grown specimens of the large breeds, including a group of 3 rotties ( :blink: ) thankfully, once her 1st season passed, she mellowed out, with help from the owner of the rotties, who allowed us to get our girl aquainted with her dogs. within a week of daily introductions she lost her fear/attack response and no longer gets antsy around big dogs.

She was a year old a few weeks ago and has not had a season, so hopefully she is due in soon and this will pass.

sounds like that might be it, then, . another point is that when meeting strange dogs, is not to tighten or shorten the lead suddenly, because she'll think that YOU are worried or whatever, and will feel that the approaching animal IS DEFINATELY a threat, and will react more extremely because of it. try to act friendly, relaxed, unconcerned. when she starts acting funny, using a 'good girl' voice, tell her not to be so silly, say hello to the other owner and their dog/s and, staying calm, keep walking past. you may have to give her lots of encouragement, but once the others are in the distance give her lots of praise and fussing. keep this up until she doesnt react when passing other dogs, then gradually, VERY gradually start making little introductions, nose sniffing etc, building it up to the point where she'll want to play with the other dog. its a big help when there is someone who regularly walks at the same time as you to whom you can explain your situation, and will 'allow' you to use their dog as 'practice'. if my friend hadnt, the whole process wouldve taken a thousand times longer

as to her 1st season, amber panicked, thinking she was going to get into trouble for leaking blood everywhere , so reassure tilly! signs to look out for: when she gets puffy and swollen around 'there', bitches vulvas swell up at that time, so it can be an early warning sign, but with some the swelling doesnt set in until AFTER the season starts, so, if shes quite a hygienic girl you may miss when the bleeding starts, and, later in life, if you wish to breed from her, you may get her dates wrong and she wont 'take' to the dog. some girls also get a bit mopey coming up to a season, this could be a sign of discomfort from cramps, or general pmt!

if you cant really tell how close she is, the way males react to her on walks can give you a hint. we had a juvenile boxer who had to be dragged away from amber, but it helped us, as she wasnt supposed to be 'on' for another month, we werent paying enough attention, and she learned to clean up!, so we didnt miss her days... the result? 7 squeaking bundles of joy!
